I was kinda lucky. My older sister got into pretty cool music soon after I became of music as something to be interested in.

She did go through a Bros phase, so any Bros drives me crazy. Drop the boy.

I guess all the Stock Aitken and Waterman stuff was big when I was a kid. So all of that shit was a horror show.
Kylie, Jason, Sonya etc.
Proper drivel.

Ooh and 5 Star. The UK's version of the Jackson 5. Really bad.

I have a particular tender spot for the Spitting Image song "Though I've never met a nice South African", which was apartheid era satire.
Mainly because the kids in school used to sing it at me because I am south African.

Oh the Chicken song... Also Spitting Image.........

Another artist that I fucking HATED was Whitney Houston.

All my Aunts loved that shit.

FUCK YOU WHITNEY AND YOUR SOULFUL VOICE and catchy ass songs.

But I do like this. Like actually like it, like it.

Urgh.. My dad loved Whitney Houston. It never made sense to me, he was into Jazz, and 70's west coast surf rock and Floyd. I'm sure he just fancied Whitney.

Some right stinkers above.

But now I'm talking proper childhood trauma - my mother had an album by this lot that just got played on repeat. I still feel slight nauseous to this day when I hear Pan Pipes.

Oh the horror

Oh gawwwd. My did really got into..
I don't even know what to call it.. Easy listening ambient?
When he started working in California. And he started getting loads of Pan Pipes shit

"The emotional songs of Whitney Houston played through the unique dulcet tones of the pan pipe".

He had loads of these pan pipe cover CDs. It was shocking.
But he also got into Harold Budd at the time, which was cool.

Hated everything popish when i was young, now i rediscover so many stuff and love it... i went from Music Fascist to "Every Genre is beautiful". Listen to stuff like Ramones, Black Sabbath, Sepultura, Slipknot... so my hate against Pop was a Lifestyle. E.g. all the Euro Dance Stuff i love today i hated in the 90s.
But to name something (i still dont like), Beagle Music - Like Ice in the Sunshine, everything by Britney Spears, Spice Girls or Take That, still dont like any Kelly Style RnB, Shania Twain&Celine Dion&Barbara Streisand (my Mom used to listen to this shit allday long). And when it comes to Oldies i totally dont like Smokey and lot of Stuff by Abba (few are ok like knowing me knowing you)

But more important Stuff i hated and know absolutly love:

But do you find yourself humming the song as you wonder 'did I buy the right size screws?' As you wait in line with the other dads on a Saturday morning in the local DIY mega store?

I work with a lot of South African people, and a lot of the parents are from SA (whites). I literally have to bite my tongue to stop singing that when I talk to them.

(Disclaimer, I get on really well with all the South Africans, all super direct, no bull-shit people, so in fact, I have met a nice South African who wasn't Breyten Breytenbach)

Loads of great Simple Minds songs up to New Gold Dream. I quite like the stuff after but then I'm a sucker for 80's cocaine fuelled production.

I guess there's too much distance between my youth and now to truly hate anything nowadays. At the time, I despised PWL and all the shit pop that came in it's wake. Now I watch Jason, Kylie and Sonia on Top Of The Pops reruns and just smile at the nostalgia.

Hair metal perhaps? Alice Cooper - Poison and anything by Heart is bloody awful.

While we're on the subject of bad new age shite that charted.

My second job was an apprenticeship in an engineering factory. It was fucking horrible. The machines all had the guards taken off of them, health and safety were non-existent. All the men were bitter old cunts, that moaned about everything and saw it as a rite of passage to make the young starter's lives as miserable as possible. Not just being sent for long weights and tartan paint but just horrible cunts that like to bully 16-year-olds day in, day out.

The factory tannoy system was tuned into local radio which played the same five songs all day long. There were a few songs that I grew to detest after hearing them 15 times a day, but the two that are properly ingrained into the psyche are:

Top Tip: Bookmark this thread and revisit in the winter.

Revisiting the the turd infested waterfall of crap music in this thread on a chilly day will make cringe yourself warm, very warm.

Now please ignite your lighter and raise 'em high one more time for Simple Minds (and pay attention to the penny whistle bit at 0.56)

I find it astounding how they went from some interesting decent stuff to such dire soulless stadium filling bollocks so easily.

I guess some people just like the money.

And cocaine.

There was a story a while back about Metalica finished a tour with a big tray of cocaine shaped in the bands logo at the wrap party. Rock and roll, apart from Simple Minds did they same about 10 years earlier.

Also, the bands original bassist, Derek Forbes was very much into funk and disco while they all grew up on punk, Roxy, Magazine, Can, Kraftwerk etc. At some point they saw U2 conquering America and fancied that instead.
