What Was The First Synth / Electronic Track You Remember Hearing?

Post by Críoch »

Not sure if there was one of these threads before..

I've always thought it was Blue Monday by New Order was the first electronic tune I heard. Guess it was pure 4/4 anyway. Used to love how it progressed as a kid. Still do.

However I was forced into watching Xmas music videos for several hours the other day.. & remembered Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime. Such a pretty abstract Xmas tune tbf!!

I recalled PMCC's Coming Up & Temporary Secretary a while back too. Both have synths.

Also remember Kraftwerk The Model.. and loved Falco's Amadeus. Pure cheese. Heard it years later at a club some friends ran & it wasn't controversial at all. People loved it. Can't remember if it was in English or German when it was in the charts.

My very very first recollection (at the age of two) of this feeling "fuck yeah! MUSIC!!!" was Dynamite by Mud, no synths though.

That Temporary Secretary track is amazing, isn't it. That arp synth seems just perfect!

How electronic a track it needs to be? I mean, synths have been on pop music for a long time.

I'd love to be cool and say New Order or Kraftwerk but as a kid I remember loving the "synth bits" in music.

My very earliest musical memory is hearing this in the kitchen a house we lived in up until I was about 4-5. (pity it was Phil fuckin' Collins) :D please forgive me a I would have been a toddler.

youtu.be/h9zj11gf9Qk (the bit at 2.23 for those that don't have the stomach to endure the full track)

Another is this, which my mum bought me on 7" and taught me how to use the record player - I remember hearing it loud in a local fairground - the synth sounded so powerful.

As got a little older I got into taping Depeche mode and New order songs from the top 40 - and well anything that had a synth in it that didn't have vocals that were too sappy

Madonna - Material Girl.

From my parents white clock radio with a red digital display (the most 80's thing ever).

I was very confused. I assumed she was literally made of material, like a rag doll. I hate that song.

Always thought that Donna Summer track ace.. then I found out it was No1 in 1977 when I was born 🤯

Never heard that Yello track before. Very cool. I can hear how it influenced other electro tracks I've encountered. Really must check them out. Know very little about them, apart from oh Yeah.

PMMC TS - perfect Arp line. Love it. Kinda sounds like old 70s computers, busy computing fx 🧐👍👍

Bought a PC best of CD for a 5er a few years back. Has never left the car. Mega tunes. Great production & sounds.

Ah.. that other tune reminds me of Axl F Beverley Hills Cop theme.. long before cRaZY Frog butchered it. God. Had that theme on a complication CD & felt like the luckiest guy in the world to have it in my collection.

Having grown up in Detroit in the 80s I'd love to say Cybotron or similar, but I'd be lying, instead my cub scout leader was into new wave synth pop stuff and when we went on outings we listened to it in his van. This was the first music I can recall as being definitely not like the rest and I wanted to know why and was told synthesisers. Some of the obvious ones that I can remember from his tapes were Visage - Fade to Gray and Devo - Whip It, but here's a pretty well forgotten period nugget that I can still clearly remember trying to make sense of to this day:
