There is a competition about who is the bestest DJ in the whole world - again: http://www.djmag.com/news/detail/3284

It it potentially open to bias as votes qualify a person into the chart.

Is throwing links out to your fans & followers unethical? or stupid? as surely it skews the results & makes any position in the Top 100 inaccurate.

What do people think?

Personally, I like the concept..

but I think the execution of it is seriously flawed & that its as much a PR stunt for the organisers as it is the people who feature in the Top whatever.

Ok, this is only my own opinion but since you ask :-)

I feel it's stupid firstly because DJing is an art form and everyone from the beginner to the mega star practice it with his own feelings. So, even judging the technical side is a no sense. We can easily tell which DJ we love (and hate) but it's hard, even impossible to tell who's better than the other.

Also because it goes opposite to everything electronic music was about when it first started. Techno and on a larger vision electronic music was fighting against rock and pop stars clichés when it first started.

Today it's exactly the same unfortunately.

Now, sending links to fans is maybe 'acceptable' since it's part of the 'business'... But sending those same links to everyone including peoples who don't have a clue of who you are is a shame.

I personally delete all messages from DJ's asking to vote for them. Since I don't believe in this practice first and also because most of the DJ's I feel true to the music don't need to be in the TOP 50 by asking... They eventually end up there naturally.

My two cents.

its just a fame contest at the end of the day. i remember polls in music mags when i was a young fella and you posted your stuff in. it was rigged but not as open to wholesale rape as these internet polls. fake to the max.

sending out beggin mails for votes is not cool in my book

God are they still running that shite!?! The fact that 99% of voters don't even read the fucking magazine makes the whole thing ridiculous. The fact that whatever cunt's had a commercial hit within the last few years always gets in the list regardless of if they DJ or not, just shows how moronic people can be. I stopped reading the mag years ago and haven't seen the results since 2008.

pretending there's some objective "best" artist/dj/whatever is ridiculous, and believing that even if there was it would be revealed through a vote is even more ridiculous!

i don't like stuff like this. it's trashy and tacky. i don't buy woman's day magazine and i don't want the electronic music equivalent of it.

First, it's entirely normal and expected for people in popularity contests to inform their fans and friends, and ask for votes.
Second, what a complete waste of time!
There is NO best DJ. Just people who have a reputation for putting on a good show, and playing music you like.

I think we need to get 4chan involved in this and see if we can get Paris Hilton to the top of the list.

I wouldnt say its unethical - just very sad

I generally unfriend or mute people who ask me to vote for them - as they obviously dont know me well enough and 99% of the time I never even listened to them

I do think its ok if your asking your fanbase

Screams of desperation and insecurity to me. Why compete in something that is fake. Makes no sense to me at all.

Cheapens someones image IMO. People need to get classy and stop appearing to be so needy. Why do the djs that have made it need to participate if they are big and successful? I'd fully expect behaviour like that from anyone with DJ inserted before their real name.

I never read these things. Dont know who has been in the top 5 the last few or any years. So its failed to make me care. Yet again.

dont think dj competitions should exist unless if in some kind of battle format like dmc's, itf's.
its too easy for people to get voted into them while their shows might consist of them playin 12 tracks in an hour and a half set. its all just whats popular
