Rave scene in Dublin ?
Rave scene in Dublin ?
Hola subsekt entities!
Next week I'm moving to Dublin from Croatia, and I would like to know how the underground scene work's there? I have done some research on the topic and only thing I've found is that downtown pubs and clubs working hours are around 02-03 a.m., and that only mainstream pop-shitty-deep house- guetta- fag dj's are playing their lolly-pop music there.
Any info about illegal outdoor raves or abandoned warehouses? Any contact would be a big help because i would like to join a crew there and make some new friends beside partying.
Cheers

Re: Rave scene in Dublin ?
There is quite a lot going on in Dublin at the moment. We have 3-4 large venues , for Dublin this means 800 - 1500 capacity , running regular techno gigs. These are mostly uninspired bookings relying on established names but there are some quality acts amongst them. There are also quite a lot of smaller & more intimate gigs with acts like JK Flesh , Lag , Abdulla Rahsim , Regis etc... You could find a gig like this most weeks.
I actually have a Croatian friend who is bringing Insolate & Volster over in April , Im sure you are familiar with them PM me on here if you want to come to this gig , would be a good place to meet some heads.
Warehouse raves are happening less and less but after hours in smaller venues across the city every weekend. The scene if pretty healthy imo but with some large venues due to close the lack of quality clubs and opening hours seems to be a constant issue here :/

"Rave" scene? There is none. There are small but passionate psy and bass scenes. Techno tends to get played in clubs, mostly its the more known names that get booked. Dublin is very small not much choice but there are some good festivals throughout the year like the upcoming Lá Tech Festival in Galway.
I guess coming from Croatia, Dublin might be a step up, but sadly Ireland has the most regressive closing times in europe, so your fucked out onto the street at 3am, high and drunk usually, as a result the DJ's are limited to very short sets. Its also a ridiculously fucking expensive city, if you can find somewhere to live that is.

Not sure what's happening off the radar but Subject always have decent listings. Life festival worth keeping an eye on, end of May (can jump on the train to Mullingar). Last year's line up was decent enough; Regis, Paula Temple, etc. Seems a little less impressive this year, maybe getting 'too big'.
The early times in clubs are totally archaic, bollocks and well documented, tied in with licencing laws based on dances from decades ago. The flip side is a lot of decent djs drop in as they know they can be in bed by 4!
Expensive though for a couple of hours music. Enjoy! ..

If the situation is so bad, why aren't people organizing something outdoor on the big green fields ? Is the unpredictable weather the main problem or the authorities? What about some abandoned halls, or warehouses? I'm sure that the opening hours problem can be bypassed with secret events. Is there any possibility to organize something like this ?

Go to the right places, meet the right people, see what happens! ..
Re: Rave scene in Dublin ?
Its just a very conservative mostly right wing country, governed my school teachers, farmers and neoliberal Thatcherite's. The weather though crap usually, was never the problem. Its a tiny country so just not enough numbers to make any real change, your talking the same 5 maybe 8k max people actually into techno... country wide.FvH wrote:If the situation is so bad, why aren't people organizing something outdoor on the big green fields ? There are of course after-hours places that change regularly as they get shut down and new ones pop up. This entails usually another expensive taxi ride and another entry fee usually €10, where yet again the DJ sets are too short mostly. Only in Ireland are 1 hour sets considered ok. So everyone just "lashes it out". The Irish think this is normal and fine but its shit really.
Sadly any producers of merit over the years have had to leave to make it and be appreciated...
On a positive note Irish crowds are some of the best in the world, and a pleasure to play in front of, because for the massive amounts of drink and drugs being consumed! Its true all the big names love playing in Ireland.

Re: Rave scene in Dublin ?
If only Coppers stopped being a STDHouse and actually focused in music for once (Or someone took over Coppers by force), Dublin would finally get its first real all nighter gig.msl wrote:sadly Ireland has the most regressive closing times in europe, so your fucked out onto the street at 3am, high and drunk usually, as a result the DJ's are limited to very short sets. But that's dreaming too far
However Dublin does have an underground scene but sadly as already mentioned it isn't Techno. There's a bunch of after parties going on all the time, if you know the right people you might end up inside a former grocerie store in Dublin's Chinatown listening to some house/trance
Re: Rave scene in Dublin ?
The bottom line is having a nightclub is just a source of revenue in Ireland, the entertainment business, end of. Generally speaking, every town has one main night club or late venue but the owners couldn't give a fuck about music and will set it up to appeal to the masses and max the cash return.
Nobody in that position will rock the boat as they run the risk of losing a tightly controlled and difficult to get licence (it's a total fucking cartel/monopoly, same as pubs).
In conservative catholic Ireland, dance/electronic music=drugs and are evil and it seems to be ingrained in society.
Thankfully that is fading out in many areas ..

Re: Rave scene in Dublin ?
I've worked in Coppers for quite some time in the bar. It just fucking sucks. The DJ there is a manager's friend that gets the top 40 from billboard, a bunch of old ass songs so people feel nostalgic and he goes with that """set""" for months in a row. I mean, he won't even accept requests (which would be expected to happen in a shitty club like that) because his range of tracks is completely limitedintrusav wrote:The bottom line is having a nightclub is just a source of revenue in Ireland, the entertainment business, end of. Also, regarding the late night licenses at least Coppers has some really shady shit going on. Because well, Cathal (the Owner) is actually a former Gardaí and a bunch of cops would go there almost daily on the upper bar (that's only accessible to manager's friends) for free before and after the "nightclub". Also, Coppers is actually a hotel, so because of that, that bar I mentioned counts as the hotel bar and because of that it can be open 24/7 but of course they put on some dancefloor and just let the night continue there for the "few" (sometimes hundreds) selected ones in a space that's smaller than my bedroom and my living room together.
I don't know, everything there is so trashy and shady
