Ableton Live 8.4
Re: Ableton Live 8.4
I just spotted that. I felt sure that they would keep 64 bit support for Ableton 9, fair play to them for giving it as a free upgrade.
I am getting on the beta train

Re: Ableton Live 8.4
Is 64 bit really worth it? I'm not an Ableton user, but the whole 64 bit thing seems a bit over rated to me. Some of the best music I own was made with 8 bit samplers etc. Put it this way, I'm in no rush to update my operating system and DAW to run a 64 bit setup. I have been known to make idiotic, incorrect decisions in the past though.....
Thank you for the laughs, debate, new music found, production tips etc etc over the years. I wish Subsekt and everyone all the best for the future. Wiu.
Re: Ableton Live 8.4
If you have a modern processor and the ability to have more than 4GB of RAM, then 64bit is really worth it. If you don't have either of these then it is best to stick with a 32bit OS.
The big difference between 32bit and 64bit is the ability to access more than 4GB RAM.
Will it make your productions sound better? No, not at all.

Re: Ableton Live 8.4
So.. unless you have 64bit - it'll stay @ 4gb?
Do you have to reinstall 64bit versions of all the plugins to work in a 64bit host, etc.. etc.. etc.. ??
Sounds painful.

Yeah, so if you have a 32bit OS you can have a maximum of 4GB of RAM - that includes your video memory. So if you have a 1GB video RAM, your OS can access only 3GB of RAM. You then use that memory to run the OS and any programs running.
If you have a 64bit OS you can have much more memory. If you run a 32bit program on a 64bit OS each program is restricted to 4GB of RAM (which is still better than the situation with a 32 bit OS).
A 64bit program running on a 64 bit OS allows the program to use a lot more memory (how much depends on the version of the OS).
You need to have 64bit versions of any VSTs you want to use in a 64bit DAW. A pain, but you can have both 32bit VSTs and 64bit VSTs installed at the same time. Actually, you can have the 32bit Ableton and the 64bit Ableton installed at the same time as well.

I don't think you can do that with the 64bit Ableton.

Hmm, might finally consider upgrading my studio PC to 64bit Windows...
