Apple is fucking everybody, like usual. $5k iMac Pros, and Mac Pros that haven't been updated since 2013.
I can't bring myself to buy a 5 year old computer design when I need it to last a while.
Any opinion on something like this:

I'm not a expert in this field but I'm running an almost 10 year old PC and it is only just starting to struggle with a full Ableton 9 project (that's almost finished). So I can't see the PC you mention being a problem

Plus the link you posted is from a 5 year old computer so you clearly don’t know what you are talking about?

Re: What do you think about this computer for Ableton Live?
Chill out buddy.
I'm saying the design of every Mac Pro that I can get = 2013. None of them cost what that computer costs. If I want to buy a 5 year old computer to write music on, I'd rather pay 1500$ for it over 3500$
I didn't say iMac, I said iMac Pro. That's the ones that are approximately $5k.
I have no idea how old that refurb is, that's why I'm asking. But you're not telling me anything that helps with the question, so cheers?

Just build the best computer you can afford based around Corei7>i5 Gigabyte or Asus motherboard, 16-32gb or Ram, M2 NVME SSD and a good quality power supply
Gigabyte GA-Z370N-WIFI, Intel Core i5 8400, EVGA SuperNOVA G2

Re: What do you think about this computer for Ableton Live?
Why do you need an iMac Pro? The 3.6hgz i7 with 32gb RAM is really powerful computer (more than its specs suggest, as turboboost gives it 4.2ghz performance and Macs are very RAM efficient). It costs $2300.
I'd do that or, if forced to use Windows, I'd build a PC from scratch.

This has been a serious rabbit hole excursion for me. I think I'm gonna start building Windows 10 Xeon based workstations...You can but together a serious monster for not much cash. Let's see how this build works out.

Does Ableton work properly with (not just 'support'!!) hyperthreading?
Don't spend money unnecessarily on gfx card or RAM unless you're abuilding a graphics workstation.

Re: What do you think about this computer for Ableton Live?
Read up on it and it does not. I would probably do some video work and run Cubase and Soundforge on it. Best advice i saw was to get fastest processors possible for ableton, because it tends to distribute each channel to a thread.terryfalafel wrote:Does Ableton work properly with (not just 'support'!!) hyperthreading?

You better of getting just a i7 for music making, the i7 8700k is quite nice actually for not that much money.

I don't know Void, I was seeing some reports of stability issues. Might be personal bias though, I've always been leery of AMD processors

Ryzen is a whole new world.
I built a new Ryzen machine for the production room, it`s so fast it has a flux capacitor.
I made my last tune in 1982.

I don't think Xeon are optimal for 'basic' computing tasks (of which, making music falls into that category).
They are server/workstation CPU's that are designed to do a certain type of work - it's not the same as comparing GHz across the board.
Current i5's will be more than enough, and an i7 will last you another 10 years. My current i7 2600k is 7 years old now? Still no issues with Ableton (or gaming, for that matter)

Re: What do you think about this computer for Ableton Live?
Since posting this I have been down a huge rabbit hole of research. I think I am going to go with the i7-7820X processor. 8 cores @ 3.6 ghz base speed. Trying to figure out the best X299 motherboard with on-board Thunderbolt 3 right now. Should last me a while.
If any of you guys know anything about the X299 motherboards, I'm down to learn it.
