Xmas Music Related Purchases

Anyone pick up something they've had their eye on for a while, or seen an offer they just couldn't walk away from?

I sold a few bits & picked up a Roland JD800 before Xmas. It needs a bit of work - keys / minor red goo problem - so that's a project keeping me busy & extra messy atm.

Impulse buy - I've got a Boss RPS10 on the way. Seemed like a funny little box of cRaZiNeSs.

Me & the missus kept it simple present wise this year- 50€ max.. so I got an old Alesis Quadraverb +. Happy out. Instant warp / Aphex / Autechre.. w.grimy sampler & playable resonator. Sounds like Valhalla stuff.

I was hoping to buy Valhalla shimmer at some point this year.. but as I don't have a computer atm it will have to wait. Same with the Ableton upgrade. Fuck it.

Apologies for talking about physical objects :)

Just a heads up for everyone, Positive Grid are giving away their classic analog modelled EQ which comes with 3 different EQs. Looks pretty sweet but yet to try it.

I traded my mfb522 plus some money for a sonic potions lxr. I've wanted this for some time now and had the chance some days ago. That's a present i made to myself, and yeah, great machine from what i've discovered so far.

The only music related purchases I've had recently are a few bits of vinyl. I e been getting the bug for that again but apart from that, 2017 was an expensive year and debts need to be played. Tempted to vet a new drum machine / and or/ sampler at some point.

Positive Grid makes awesome software, so gotta check that Eq out. Thanks!

My Xmas purchases were Reaktor, Soundtoys bundle (got a great discount) and now I'm thinking about getting OB-X pro ii. It had totally slipped under my radar for all these years and man it sounds amazing. Really great emulation of a lot of synthesizers actually. It's 85 Euro now (down from 179 Euro) for 3 more days. Hmmm

Soundtoys was one of the best purchases I had ever made. Got the bundle last year. I also grabbed Reaktor this year.

Here's something I picked up recently:
Image
It's a Brüel & Kjær frequency analyzer, with built in filters (4 modes) and what I assume is some kind of tube amplification. Not opened it up yet, when I plugged it in for a second this afternoon it wouldn't power up but at least it didn't burst into flames/create weird smells, and I didn't get electrocuted, so that's a half decent start at least. Guess the smart thing to do would have been to check for ground leaks and then go from there though curiosity got the best of me... Found some documentaion which suggests the output voltage might blow just about any audio equipment you connect to it so gonna have to build a simple attenuator for the output, and I have some spare XLR connectors lying around so when it's working they're going to be installed as well.

Also got in the last parts for my new pc, so as soon as it's set up I can finally make music again without having to freeze shit all the time, which is pretty neat.

Hmm, I've not used it very much yet. The difference is fairly subtle compared to the headphone amp of my Scarlett 2i, I think the bass region is a bit more pronounced but I'm not familiar enough with the AKGs yet to really tell. What's a bit annoying is that my Scarlett only has monitor outs so I have to turn off my monitors if I want to use the headphones with the headbox, or it'll crank the monitors aswell.

Ive read multiple posts online, I think a few were from gearslutz that the AKG 701/702 sound much different in the bass region after burn in time. Apparently someone had discovered this when comparing a newly bought pair and an older pair that had been in use for some time. I know some people say its a compete myth but I can see the theory behind the drivers moving more easily after prolonged burn in.

As for me Ive bought a Yamaha TX81Z, A Mackie 1202 Mixer, Zoom B3n and a couple other pedals for my No Input Feedback loop Setup. I still can come up with more subtle soft weird type sounds but ive yet to scratch the surface. Im pretty pumped for the TX81Z as it does seem to have some really interesting tones and is a hidden gem. I picked it up for about 70 euroin fantastic shape.

I thought burn in time for headphones and speakers was meant to be a myth? I'm sure I've read before that it is the user that gets used to them. Not the speaker wearing in. Could be wrong though. I might of dreamt it lol.

Got my Boss rps 10 today. It's a pitch shifter delay.

Sounds cool as is.. on a drumloop.. but gets fucked when you play notes / audio into the 'keyboard control' socket. It gets skuzzy lo-fi. Interesting box with a tt303 sequencer free running notes into it, messing with tempo & volume.
