I need a studio mixer.....

Post by Wiu »

Helloooo,

I'm starting to buy some more hardware to go along side my x0x0b0x, however my audio interface only has 2 TRS inputs (or 1 stereo if you prefer), so I find myself needing studio mixer. Just wondering if any of you guys have any advice on what to look for before I lay out some ££'s. Basically, I just want to have everything into the mixer, then plug the mixer into my audio interface so I can record. It'll just save me having to constantly unplug and rewire stuff I guess.

As you can tell, I'm kinda clueless with this (I'm a product of the software revolution!), so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

W

My budget's up to about £350. I've been looking at a few Mackie's. I'll check out the Yamaha's.

Cheers Mslwte :)

I've just been looking at the Yamaha MG 166CX. Looks fucking awesome! There's a USB model too for slightly more.

i got a motu ultralite mk3 recently, picked one up for under 500 euro (not sure what that is in stirling) on thomann, has 8 inputs, enough for an xoxbox, drum machine and a synth or 2, its great, built like a brick and havent had any hassle with it, money well spent

It depends what you want to do with it Wiu.

I was in a similar situation and got a 16 channel Mackie mixer for my x0xb0x, drum machines, a couple of synths and a few FX, and it was fine for a while, but with only 2 FX sends and 16 (actually only 8 really, 4 mono and 4 stereo) channels, it wasn't long before it started feeling really cramped and I would basically be patching in and out on the fly.

If you're going to build a hardware setup then definitely think towards the future and get something with enough channels and FX sends that will last you. There will be lots of decent second hand options available which might be worth looking at.

But yeah, just try to work out how many inputs and outputs you need and factor in future expansion and base your decisions around that. If you're going to be routing most of your gears into the computer for FX then maybe look at a soundcard with plenty of inputs on it.

I found it a really tough call to make and in retrospect should have got something second hand and bigger rather than new and smaller.
