No Effects on Robert Hood Minimal Nation

Post by Jean Luc Cougar »

I read this a while ago, and for whatever reason re-read it again recently:

https://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2 ... k-by-track

For whatever reason, I can't get over the fact that he made this album with no external effects:

"There was no reverb, compression or additional effects used when recording the record – Hood simply didn’t have the necessary equipment."
(Apparently, the mastering engineer (Ron Murphy) added some reverb to the master during mastering)

I suppose the Yamaha DX100 has a psuedo reverb, the Juno 1 had chorus, and maybe the QY100 has effects (I am unsure) - but the TR-909, and SH-101 would have been totally dry I guess.

ANYWAY:
I have always thought of this record as a bit of a masterpiece and that the songs had the perfect amount of space, somehow that he used no compression, or reverb blows my mind. I guess it's just perfectly tight envelopes (instead of compression) and that tiny bit of reverb on the master making it all work.

Minimal nation is expertly composed and arranged as well, so there is less need for special FX really. And the sound choices are well thought of. It's kinda like watching a low/medium budget art movie against a Hollywood blockbuster. Both have their place and their merits, but they are different beasts.

it's an interesting thought because I think fx killed the minimal sound

Crazy idd!
. is the minimal track for me, it soo good i get that special feeling every time i listen to it.
Hood really is a master at composition and a finding these intricate grooves that just work with only a few elements
