ASIO vs ASIO4ALL

Post by Monreal »

Ok maybe a dumb question but bear with me:

So I just bought brand new PC, downloaded my sound interface's driver (2i2 MKI). Now I realized I can't use Ableton and watch Youtube, movie etc etc at the same time, so I've downloaded the ASIO4ALL. Should I keep it or it doesn't worth the downgrade? How much sound quality will I lose, if any?

Asio4all is a driver. It can't affect sound quality directly i don't think. If you think it is, check there's no funny sample rate conversion happening.

I heard people being very happy with this software, integrating their multimedia/gaming into DAW and vice versa...

That's just down to your exclusivity settings with the soundcard within windows.
But also, why do you want to use ableton and watch YouTube at the same time?

It's not necessarily at the same time per se. I sometimes minimize Ableton and check out some stuff on the internet.

Are these numbers good?

If you really want to watch youtube or do other stuff while producing.

I 'd say keep it at 44100, 16bit :)

I often combine Ableton and producing tutorials / inspiration etc from other applications like YT. These settings have always worked fine for me. UMC ASIO Driver is something specific for my audio interface.

Edit: Also in some of the ASIO specific settings for my UMC driver, I've set the ASIO buffer sample size to auto.

You should be able to share a single interface for both Ableton and Windows simultaneously. You need to check your drivers and audio settings. AISO4ALL is meant to aggregate two or more AISO devices/drivers into one virtual device. It don't think it will help with device exclusivity, unless it's a driver limitation. I believe Windows requires audio drivers to support shared mode, although it's been a long time since I was doing driver development.

Withing FL studio I can use autoclose, so when I minimize FL the driver shuts down and I have sound on youtube and others. I used to use Fl studio Asio, cuz it let me use other sound outside FL, but it suddenly started to work like shit (kept crashing FL), so I switched to Asio4 All and the autoclose button

You need a soundcard with an ASIO multiclient driver like the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 supports. RME also have ASIO multiclient drivers.
