SGA1566 Mk 2
I`ve been using version 1 for ages.
Version 2 adds some more flexible control, overall performance improvements and different oversampling options.
This is a super accurate tube pre-amp that processes in real time via circuit simulation, so it is a CPU monster for those with less than super systems.
But it sounds great, over the 2bus it will add some nice natural feeling harmonics (warmth) and will give subtle compression for glue. Push it and you get a really beautiful "alive" distortion.
Only 30 dollar as well, no-brainer.

Thanks for the info regarding the new version. I've also used the free version loads for some years

Re: SGA1566 Mk 2
How does this compare to other tube preamp plugins such as Soundtoys' Radiator and the Wavearts Saturator?
Re: SGA1566 Mk 2
With 4x oversampling and HQ mode the free version takes 60-70% of my CPU
Re: SGA1566 Mk 2
Thanks! Will check this out.
Re: SGA1566 Mk 2
After a couple days I have to say, I really like the sound of this on the master, are there any alternatives with a similiar sound that are more CPU friendly?
Re: SGA1566 Mk 2
If i have any plugins on my master bus(mixbus) in the project that are cpu heavy, i just have them bypassed and wait until im bouncing my final mix and then turn them on.dubdub wrote:After a couple days I have to say, I really like the sound of this on the master, are there any alternatives with a similiar sound that are more CPU friendly?
Just so i can work in the project without the cpu going mad.

Not many this real.
Wavearts tube is good but pretty CPU intense.
Radiator by soundtoys. Not as good but close. Less intense CPU hit.

Re: SGA1566 Mk 2
I already mentioned Wavearts and Radiator above But I like the tone of this on the 2bus a bit more than either of them. It feels a bit less transformative in the frequency balance than the others, especially in regards to bass - I don't have to really readjust the mix after whacking it on.
I think Wavearts v2 is pretty managable if you turn off the EQ and leave oversampling off. SGA (the free v1 at least) on the other hand seems to not work properly in low CPU mode. I tried it on a hihat and on low CPU mode it essentially turns the sound into a click if you drive it. On high CPU mode it produces the saturation breakup you'd expect.

So if using this (or radiator etc) on the mixbus is it something you would mix in to like you would a compressor or is it something you would add at the end for a little 'sparkle' to finish? I usually mix into Reelbus then a compressor.

I always mix in to anything I stick on the master bus. Otherwise your mix may alter detrimentally if you do it post.
Re: SGA1566 Mk 2
It's CPU hungry as fuck....

Saw on KVR that they have a new saturator out - http://www.shatteredglassaudio.com/product.php?id=109
