Little helpers to get back on track! ARP HARMONY CHORD TOOL

Post by johannes heil »

i have builded a midi rack for you cats out there which might suffer
loss of creativity sometimes to hopefully get you back on track……

don't forget: i am one of you :!:

how tu use it:

create two midi tracks, drop the auto harm arp adg to one of them.

drop any kind of synth to the other midi track, set midi in to the
channel where auto harm arp is on, monitor in and record arm.

create a midi clip on the auto harm arp channel, draw one
long note in for example, note c2, length 1bar.

engine explaination:

left side macro knobs

minor: by turning it fully to the right a second tone will be added in a minor interval.
major: by turning it fully to the right a second tone will be added in a major interval.
fourth: by turning it fully to the right a second tone will be added in a fourth interval.
fifth:…. right, same game adding a fifth………
octave: you name it!

all of the above controls will add notes to the arp trigger pattern and change the timing

steps: selects the octave range of the arp.
speed: note tempo.
length: note length.

right side macro knobs

add fourth: by turning it fully to the right it will add a fourth without changing the arp trigger pattern.
add fifth: " " "
add oct: " " "
rand oct: controls the chance percentage of randomly added octaves
sub fourth: adds a subtracted fourth without changing the arp trigger pattern.
sub fifth: " " "
sub oct: " " "

all of the above controls will only add notes to the harmonic content without changing the timing

main pitch: main pitch :)

now tweak and fiddle until you understand what it does in order to control the result knowingly
or just tweak and fiddle until you fall in love with what you hear.

then record the sequence into a midi clip on your synth track in case you want to change something which could not be changed inside of the engine, rearrange, shift or do whatever you
feel like doing with the data to finish your brand new sequence.

if you do not like consonance in the moment of tweaking simply
edit the midi effect rack in order to turn it into a auto disharmonic arp……

BE HAPPY, HAVE A NICE DAY, YOUR WELCOME!

ps. feel free to contribute more little helpers to your beloved community!

Anyone have any luck getting this to open?

Is it based on the M4L Arp?

ok, I downloaded it here upstairs, and indeed it doesn't seem to open to anything useful when you unzip it,
so it could be that it didn't work downstairs and I had accidentally opened the one I downloaded years ago.
Anyway, was pretty easy finding it back now I had the name, and now I know the old file works on 2 laptops.
Haven't tested it as of yet, but since it opens, I suppose all you need to do is follow mr Heil's instructions.
I've put the file in my dropbox if you want it.

just tested it. the thing works perfectly fine if you use mr Heil's instructions and the (unzipped) file I uploaded to my dropbox.

a few small things that help make it even more fun :
Try different styles of the ARP, because there is no knob routed to switch the style.
Try turning on velocity and turning the decay and target knobs. I've personally always thought the arp in Live works best with that option turned on.
I would also start recording stuff as MIDI clips asap to start deleting some notes, otherwise it's all still the typical arpeggio-style stuff you hear...

you need to add .adg to the filename, then its working fine :)

Dont know what was happening there.. the file was messed up. Was asking me for M4L license numbers when I was trying to open it.

Anyway.. I can see now that its all stock Ableton midi tools; Arp, Chord, Random & Pitch. Sounds good!

Thanks for the tool.

I opened it ok, just unzipped and dragged it onto a midi clip and then saved the default file as is and deleted the downloaded file. Routed it to Dexed to try out some random FM weirdness. I like when I try these things and I don't know what I'm doing, it's these little moments of 'I have no fuckin clue what this does' that cool things come out. Will have a deeper look tomorrow.

A question for those who use M4L, I've recently started getting into some of the sequencers for it mainly to experiment with polyrhythms and forward/backward sequences and other such stuff but is there any way to 'interconnect' these things? I can't find any info on this.

As an example, say I have the M4L mono sequencer on a midi channel and routed to a synth, is there any way to also route the sequencer to another M4L sequencer to move the latter sequencer on 1 step everytime a step event occurs on the main sequencer? Does that make sense?

This sort of stuff is really creative when you do it with hardware stuff but as far as I can tell, each sequencer is an independent device in Ableton. Like when I had a Machinedrum & an SH-101, the 101 has an internal sequencer and obviously the Machinedrum does too, I used to use a spare output and send a 'pulse' single cycle wave out into the SH101. If I placed this pulse on every 16th note in the Maachinedrum, the SH-101's pattern would play back as it was programmed but if you skip notes or pattern length, you divide the pattern up and get into experimental territory.

Is this sort of thing possible with the M4L sequencers?
