The worst bit of kit you ever bought?

Post by ZERO »

Ive so much stuff that i never use. I buy it cos it makes me happy i suppose, but its a dreadful waste.

I bought a new guitar in january, even though I havent played a musical instrument in years. €600. Only played it a couple of times since I got it home, but i do like looking at it. Haha, dont care, I always wanted a Fender Jazzmaster

I think the worst stuff I buy is software, cos I never end up using it. All the PSP stuff apart from the Vintage Warmer is gathering digital dust on my HD.

soft synths for me. I had a clear out there a while back & sold most of what I wasnt using. You wont get what you paid for them, but its worth it.

Most useless fucking thing that I ever bought was a USB record deck. It was a 100 quid & I expected a lot more from it. Should have bought a much better one.. but I thought it was a bargain. It is SO shit. The arm skips on the grooves in the vinyl FFS.

Yeah man - I got a nocturn, thinking that it would be like having a "real synth" kinda thing.. but same as - it never lived up to controlling plugins.

However it is brilliant for jamming. I didnt use it for ages until I figured I could use it for controlling the mixer in Logic & jam it(ish) like you can in Ableton. Since I made the switch to ableton I dont really use it anymore - but its still plugged in for the xfader for Traktor.

However, it really is a piece of shit. Some of the Pots change the parameters as expected - nice and smooth. Others dont, and you have to twist them around 3 times to get the same movement one twist achieves with the others. Maybe its just a duff one.. but dunno, I think they are good controllers for your DAW or a single bit of software, like Traktor - but not for lots of individual plugins.

The MKII - that was the one with the LCD read out with the track names? and motorised faders? That would have been wicked for the DAW - what didnt you like about it? Were you disappointed that it couldnt control plugs as easy?

Yeah it had the lcd was supposed to have track names, I didnt know the faders were automated? coulda knocked a few minutes of a laugh out of that, the automap was not all it was made out to be, granted it seemed alright with the built in instruments on Ableton, it was the likes of sylenth1 and massive etc I wanted it for and I was left with bank upon bank of bullshit. I have an oxygen 8 I can program how I like, I bought the novation because it was supposed to do all that messing for me. {end of rant}

My reloopshitmixer and decks were the worst things i ever bought. What a waste of cash and time. Decks never really were accurate pitch wise and the FX button on the mixer made this clicking noise. Fuck sake, i still get pissed off thinking about it!!!

i have the mk1. no compliants at all with the controller. it communicates seemlessly. but im not a fan of automap, i just map what i need to use in ableton.

digitech dsp 16. utterly horrible and inflexible.

i ended up harvesting the power supply and converting a fostex delay from 110 to 240 volts with it.

good riddance :-)

i am dead happy with my zero sl ii even though automap is a pain, theres a little setting that adjusts the increments of each and every pot, the dials are a little small for my sausage fingers but in all its pretty decent lol. Like every midi device if you want it to do what YOU want it to do its a tortuous task programming it

I've got to say it's a Behringer UMA25S. I only use it's knobs as the keys are plain awful, toy-like. I've bought fairly cheap, and I guess it's worth it, haha

probably akai mpd24. purely because the pads were so shit. i had a korg padkontrol before that, it was awesome. very sensitive pads. the mpd24's were very unresponsive, and needed to be hit pretty hard just to get the lowest velocity. not a useful controller.

I had the orbit and to be fair it was packed with oldschool emulations but it was a pile of shit. No that's harsh, it wasn't totally shit just not fat sounding. Cheap.

an emu 1616m soundcard.
it was the laptop version.
Read the small print on their website and they tell you it is only compatible with dinosaur chipsets and it comes packed with the least useable dinosaur software...

High spec piece of shit!
still have it though if anyone needs a breakout box...

I wouldn't say that I've bought anything I totally regret, but I've been/am on a real hardware spending spree recently. I recently got a Vermona DRM1 and whilst I like it (loads of dials to tweak), I was really disappointed with the snare and clap. Sure they're analog and all that, but they just seem really weak to me and I'll end up having to layer them to fatten them up a bit. Also whilst I love having the hardware stuff, I must say I still 90% of the time tend to load up software because it's so much easier and instant results. That said, I'll still end up buying more hardware! I WANT A MOOG DAMMIT!!!!
Thank you for the laughs, debate, new music found, production tips etc etc over the years. I wish Subsekt and everyone all the best for the future. Wiu.

One thing I do quite a lot now is record in the audio. The best thing with that is you can't mess with it like you can with a vst. I always found myself tweaking and losing my original sound/idea and not getting stuff finished :) hardware FTW :P

Interesting what you say about the vermona. I always had my eye on one, does it have loads of individual outs? Bit of eq and comp on the clap and snares maybe?
