Mixdown Bus Template?
I've been trying to speed up my workflow but having to always put plugins one by one, sometimes forgetting some, slows me down a bit.
Lately been getting into the production style of Berlin Techno (Speedy J, Ben Klock, Tommy Four Seven, Radio Slave, etc.)
Anyone has any recommendations on what they like to use on their mix busses and/or master bus?
Would also like to hear any tips for the best way to set up a good template on Ableton Live.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys!
To get an idea, this is what I'm working on:

Re: Mixdown Bus Template?
There are no templates for well produced techno about, it's about technique more than gear.
But a typical basic Channel will involve
Gain staging\console emulation
*Compressor* (not always needed)
EQ of choice.
The rest is down to building a channel chain that gets you the sound you want for that channel.
You may want to set up sub-groups for your drums, and have a compressor on that sub group to pull the drums together and give them some dynamic interrelation, maybe an EQ and reverb to give them an overall tonal glue.
Master bus for techno you'd be crazy to not have a compressor on there.

You're talking about multi-band compressors right ?

Even if I don't know what i'm doing? Years of listening to painfully overcompressed music has given me this almost irrational fear of compression, like my Ableton will explode in flames as soon as I put a compressor on the master bus. What compressor do you mix into? I'm guessing you set a setting beforehand and then don't change it? If you have a generic setting that will work in most situations (obviously compression is situational...) I'd try that because I wouldn't even know where to start when using compression on the master.Lost to the Void wrote:Master bus for techno you'd be crazy to not have a compressor on there.

Re: Mixdown Bus Template?
Techno isn't techno without compression. If do it right it adds life and movement to the mix, overcompression was schranze era, it's a whole other thing.
You should start with a compressor on the mix.
Actually, I'm going to write a guide for master bus compression.
I've been enjoying MJUC compressor on the master bus, but SKNote do some lovely compression too.

A guide would be neat. I do have MJUC although I don't use it much except on bass sometimes.

yeah guide would be great
Re: Mixdown Bus Template?
/Ignoreme - Just make sure to use presets named "magic mastering" and you're fine. Which plugin doesn't matter really.

Would you recommend putting a glue compressor on the master?Lost to the Void wrote:Techno isn't techno without compression. If do it right it adds life and movement to the mix, overcompression was schranze era, it's a whole other thing.

Yeah you can do, it's a good buss compressor. Not my fave any more but it very capable for the 2bus.MattAltmanMusic wrote:Would you recommend putting a glue compressor on the master?Lost to the Void wrote:Techno isn't techno without compression. Re: Mixdown Bus Template?
Thanks for taking the time to do that. I've treated myself to MJUC and I'm going to try to follow your guide on my next track. Compression, especially bus compression, is frankly a bit of a mystery to me.Lost to the Void wrote:Look at the sticky at the top of this very subforum and behold with your eyeballs the new mix bus compression guide.
