Your DAW/sequencer history?
I just realized in that reason 9.5 thread that my DAW using history went something like this:
Music 2000 (PSX)
(strange moment when my gaming addiction turned into something else...)
MTV Music Generator 2 (PS2)
(I distinctly remember crying for almost a full day, when a memory card with 15 track "album" on it got corrupted)
Fruityloops (free I believe)
(I used to play my creations online to Americans, as well as DJ sets, I spent a fortune on Vinyl, probably more then 5k, becasue I was living at home and worked a full time job, I had more cash then sense)
Reason (almost certainly cracked)
(A neighbor gave me a track he did on Rebirth, and I saw it as "a serious programme" my brother download a cracked version, on the dial up internet I paid for, running up a phone bill of about 600quid (the programme to buy was about 300))
Cubase
(actually went to a course to learn how to use it, becasue it was IMPOSSIBLE to figure out)
Reason rewired into Cubase
Reason
Protools
(During Univesity)
Reason wired into Protools
Reason (I believe by now I owned a legit copy)
Reason rewired into Ableton live
Ableton live
Reason
I've always come back to Reason.

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
impulse tracker on DOS - didn't know what i was doing but was very exciting at the time
octamed - started making full tracks on this. All rephlex sounding stuff if i remember correctly.
Ableton 2 - liked it, was very limited and no midi. wanted to sequence hardware so went off it.
Logic 5 on PC - loved it. Had a cracked version of 5.5.1 which crashed regularly. Persisted with this for a while until pc upgrade. Always missed it.
MaxMsp - went off traditional DAWs for a while and built sequencers within this to drive external gear. Big bank of meandering tracks made with this. Love it. Want to get back into it.
Renoise - loved this. leant more towards using breakbeats. came easily as i started with trackers in the beginning.
Sonar 8 + x1 Producer- made alot of stuff with this. Still think this has the best sounding native tools of all the DAWs i've used. Transient shapers, comps etc. excellent DAW. Pc laptop was too weak so it was a bit unstable.
Logic 9 + X - switched from pc to osx and returned to logic. Write everything with this. Missed it all those years.

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
I used Cubase for about 10 minutes
Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
I tried Reason for a short period and noodled around with FL for like two weeks when I was 15 but basically just Live.
Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
Never used anything but Ableton and see 0 reason to ever switch .

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
Hmmm
Started with turbosound on the Amiga
Then MED.
Then OctaMED which ran samples and sequenced our synths in my first industrial band. Came on tour with us actually.
After that switched to hardware sequencing. Use to use Kawai sequencers.
Then a friend gave me fruity loops and I discovered vst.
Then also discovered Orion, which I eventually went on to become a beta tester and consultant for (sonic syndicate who became synapse audio)
Was working in commercial studios and collaboration so also used logic, cubase, sonar, pro tools.
Eventually decided to stop using hardware sequencers and started playing live with ableton.
Then started using ableton to produce.
Became ableton certified trainer.
Still using ableton now. Along with my Octa as hardware sequencer currently.

hehe same about the fruityloops partdubdub wrote:I tried Reason for a short period and noodled around with FL for like two weeks when I was 15 but basically just Live.
then i used fruity loops again but never understood anything.
then after years of djing got into producing more serious in the last fall.
Studio One 3 and then ableton
Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
All hardware from 1996 - 2001. First just an MC-303 (lovable piece of shit it was), then an MPC + D-50 + An1X. Then Reason in 2001. Added Cubase in 2002. Never really updated Cubase after 2004. Got an academic copy of Live in 2009, but kept going with Reason as well. Got Logic in 2016. Now I work about 60% in Logic; 40% in Reason.
I still have Live 8 in case I start doing live stuff again. But Logic works better for me, for whatever reason, so I haven't and probably won't upgrade it.

C64 - Sidmon
Amiga - Soundtracker / Protracker / AHX
PC - Fasttracker II / Buzztracker / Renoise / Ableton
Also used Creator / Notator on the Atari and Logic on MacOS, but that was never a mutual love thing.

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
Started with Reason 4, then tried Cubase because of VST Support for a while. Now using Bitwig and being happy but i still think Reason is a great DAW and in the future with VST support, finally open. Loved the Hardware realworld touch (even if i dont give a fuck about analog and hardware stuff, being itb only) but it helped understanding the routings and chains and getting Sounds out of a software.

One thing I've never used is a midi sequencer/keyboard.
I always used mouse (and sometimes keyboard shortcuts)

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
I tried a few but I mostly stuck with flstudio and ableton live. FL studio is just too messy, Live is the best.
Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
Big up to the tracker crew who had no idea what the fuck was going on.
Early 90's I started messing with Tetra compositor a 4 channel tracker and I had no idea what I was doing either, I was only 8 or 9.
Then fast tracker, impulze tracker etc.
But no matter how many trackers I'd use I never learned anything
Rubber Duck and Hammerhead drum machine's '95-'96. Sequencing breakbeats and 808's damn it was fun.
Making Waves '96-'97 basically just arranging wav files from a sample cd thinking I was a bad ass D&B producer
Cubase vst 3.2 up to Sx3 '98-'08 started out with an akai s2000 with a whopping 16mb of ram.
Ableton Live '08- present, don't think I'll ever switch to another daw but then again I said the same thing with Cubase

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
It all started for me with Ejay. It was fun just playing around with it as a kid. After that I found out about Fruity Loops and stuck with it. I use Reason from time to time but my main is FL Studio.
Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
Haha Hammerhead was funny. all the breaks stayed in time no matter what tempo. felt like cheating at the time.arkos wrote: Rubber Duck and Hammerhead drum machine's '95-'96. Sequencing breakbeats and 808's damn it was fun.

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
I remember doing midi CC automation for OctaMED for our synths for live stuff.
That was insane.

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
Haha techno ejay. In the late 90's with a Carl cox sample collection.
Then moved onto a crack of cubase sx.
Then bought reason and rebirth. Then bought Cubase 5.
But it wasn't until I bought Ableton and got onto some online tutorials that I started to make some progress.

Re: Your DAW/sequencer history?
Interesting thread..
I had a habit of trying out lots of software mainly out of curiously:
First I was given a copy of Ableton on a CD but seemed too complex at first.
Then used Logic for a while.
Moved onto Reason.
Then Pro Tools.
I got a copy of Cubase with a desk I bought but only used it briefly.
Went into Max and pd for the fun of it.
Enjoyed the coding aspect so used Csound as well.
Finally came full circle and settled on Ableton.
