To choke or not to choke?

Its not something that I've ever used.. but I seen Milton Bradly talking about them & it got me thinking about using them on other elements for top bits of tracks.

I normally try to keep all the drums tight with ASDR - but I like the idea.. just wondering if anyone here use choking on their drums etc..?

It's handy for mimicking real drum kits. For example; I think a drummer can't play an Open HH & Closed HH at the same time cuz one chokes the other out. Personally I never use the option, I use ADSR, Midi Note Length or some other manual way.

yeah - same as me.. think I'll look into it though next time & see. I know that theres the choke thing with the 909 on the hats, isnt there? so theres got to be a vibe that you can get thats useful

i really liked what he was saying about choke groups and it makes a lot sense with heavily syncopated drums.

it could definitely be worth experimenting if you have more than one layer of drums playing different patterns at the same time.

in a choke group only one sample plays at a time, so when a sample starts it cuts off whatever samples currently playing.

I've been experimenting with choke groups for many years and I'm really into it for lots of stuff. Choking synths with hihats or percussion used to be one thing I used a lot for my old harder techno. If using 909 / 808 samples it really helps out getting the authentic drum-machine feel by choking as well.

Ahh, cheers sam. I actually do this all the time. I tend to use Logic's EXS sampler and put it into mono to achieve this and then use the release ADSR control to get it sounding right. Always do it for kick drums.

It can be useful sometimes, but like anything, if you use it all the time then meh.....

For the more loose bass music beats I am into these days, choking just doesn't work.

It`s not really down to that, more about a certain sound, choking is a way of emulating old skool equipment. It does work for some things, especially for detroity/chicago feelings, but I wouldn`t say it is something to always apply, it works great with hats and machine sounds, but on more natural sounds it sometimes ends up sounding very wrong.

Midi-gates are also a good alternative.

If you apply choking all the time then you are limiting yourself to a sound, that's all, it works for some things, but is shite for others.

i want to find a way to dynamically choke frequency bands.

i've been looking at the fourier transform functions in puredata. its a bit complicated and will take quite a major bout of sustained concentration which is probably going to be way beyond me.
