Subsekt, I need your help and advice for a change.
Basically the mixer I have for my live PA is wonderful BUT not enough buses.
So what I need is
Mixer
8-12 Channels.
At least 2 aux buses, send/returns so I can dub mix etc
Small form factor (needs to be portable, will be coming out on the road in custom flight case)
At least 3 band EQ with mid sweep parametric, per channel
New or old, advice e much appreciated.

Man, I wish I could help you, but I have no idea at all.
Re: Subsekt, I need your help and advice for a change.
I use a soundcraft efx8 that satisfies those requirements but it might be bigger than what you want - it's not huge though. I'm not sure if you could find a much smaller mixer with all of those features.
Re: Subsekt, I need your help and advice for a change.
Oh actually looking at it, only has one aux send, so it might not work for you.
Re: Subsekt, I need your help and advice for a change.
Newer model has two busses though, might be worth checking out. I've always rated Soundcraft stuff as it's decently priced and sounds good.

That's actually what I have, the efx8 but it isn't really a 2 buss mixer, size and quality is perfect though.terly wrote:Newer model has two busses though, might be worth checking out. I've always rated Soundcraft stuff as it's decently priced and sounds good.

But those mpmi and mfxi might be just what I need. Subgroups too. Good call!!
Re: Subsekt, I need your help and advice for a change.
I'm looking at the soundcraft mfxi series myself. Also looking st the A&H zed fx series. Can't speak from experience with either though!

I'm looking at the 20 channel version.

looks nice too...
I honestly wouldn't know about these smaller yamaha mixers, but looks just what I need in form.

i've used a few allen and heaths over the year and they've never let me down - the probably the closest to what you need:
http://www.allen-heath.com/series/wizard/
flexible, build like tanks, plenty of auxes, decent 4-band eq with two sweepable mids, stereo returns, 100mm faders etc. - 14:4:2 prob the best if not too big

I went for old Mackie 1604VLZ Pro, those desks are compact enough to be considerable for live setup,
16 channels,
4 bus
8 individual outs
Klasik Mackie distortion as a nice bonus (Instant gabber kicks from routing individual outs back to another channel strip)
Hope that helps a bit.
PS. Also wanted to say hello, as it's my first post, after half year of stalking around here.

Re: Subsekt, I need your help and advice for a change.
yeah, I really don`t like the sound of mackies, don`t really want to blow 600 quid on a mixer that is going to get absolutely crapped on in clubs.
Going for soundcraft I think, price, size, features and sound all hit the mark.

Will be curious to hear what you think about it.Lost to the Void wrote:yeah, I really don`t like the sound of mackies, don`t really want to blow 600 quid on a mixer that is going to get absolutely crapped on in clubs.

If it was for home use I might go with a mix wizard.
But for live PA, it's going to get abused and mixers are a very weak link in the chain when it comes to live gear.
I could buy 2 soundcraft for the price of a mixwizard, which makes replacement a much easier prospect to deal with.

Plus it has the Custom Karaoke preset which is obviously going to become a secret weapon feature.Lost to the Void wrote:That's actually what I have, the efx8 but it isn't really a 2 buss mixer, size and quality is perfect though.terly wrote:Newer model has two busses though, might be worth checking out. Well, I can't help you with "the sound of the mackies" but you're misunderstood the price range, as I am talking here about VLZ Pro which is from early 2000's USA built.Lost to the Void wrote:yeah, I really don`t like the sound of mackies, don`t really want to blow 600 quid on a mixer that is going to get absolutely crapped on in clubs.
I got one from Gumtree in London for 250 quid. Easy, rock solid mixer.
If you want it to be soundcraft i would go for M12 but it's out of production as well, and actually hard to find on second hand market.

Yeah I have an old M8 actually, fucking massive compared to todays compact mixers, as was the M12.
I`ll take a look on ebay and see what decent old mackies crop up, but size is a big issue and older mixers do tend to be less efficient on space.
Re: Subsekt, I need your help and advice for a change.
Any specific reason why you wouldn't just request a mixer on your rider? That's what the majority of live acts seem to do. I mean, I imagine everyone has some horror stories regarding that but a club that is too stupid to source a working Soundcraft mixer or something likely has plenty of other issues.

Re: Subsekt, I need your help and advice for a change.
I been playing live for way too many years to not turn up with everything I need to play.
Experience has taught me that the least fuck ups occur when all I need to do is hand the sound guy my stereo output and that's it.
It's always a good idea to have a technical rider in your booking contract, but they aren't worth the paper they are written on in clubland.

Any opinions about the Soundcraft Signature series multitrack desks like this one: http://www.soundcraft.com/en/products/signature-22-mtk ??
