Plug-in alternatives/workarounds (Mac ballache)

Post by Jambourgie »

Hello chaps,

I'm in the rather stressful process of moving from Windows to Mac.

I'm obviously coming up against a lot of plug-ins that I've used a lot in the past being unavailable for Mac, either due to the 32bit thing that were never updated, or just that the devs didn't make them for Mac. I know I could use JBridger etc to run the 32bit plugs (which i did on my old Windows machine), but I've decided to leave 32bit in the past with the new transition.

So one little plug that I used to use everywhere was a simple little tool called DFX Monomaker. It does (did) exactly what it says on the tin - makes stereo signals mono. This is a 32bit plug-in, anyone know of something that does the same? Or perhaps a way of achieving the same quickly inside the DAW (Cubase)? I used to chuck it on anything low-frequency, so I suppose a more efficient method would be to find something that sits on the master and makes everything mono under a certain frequency. Any ideas?

The second issue is Plug-Ins written only for Windows. I'm talking about you, makers of Baxter EQ/Thrillseeker etc. Any Mac friendly alternative recommendations for these? I've heard you can get utilities to run Windows plug-ins on a Mac. Anyone have any knowledge about this?

Cheers

EDIT.

Please ignore the first half of my question regarding Monomaker. I just checked KVR and there it is in all it's 64bit Mac-friendly glory. Doh! Swear it wasn't there before. Will leave my original question unedited anyway in case anyone can recommend a simpler way of achieving this which I haven't thought of.

Hi, I would never suggest using any wrapper for plug ins. Even the Rosetta one from Apple is glitchy. Try https://klanghelm.com/contents/products/VUMT.html for mono at the desired frequency and much more. EQ is very subjective. The NI ones are actually pretty good as are Overloud, if you want analog style. Stock eqs are usually underrated and pretty clean. Depends on your DAW. Good luck and feel free to send me any other Apple questions.

Thanks. I actually own a few Klanghelm plugs so will check out the VUMT. Thought it was just a meter...

I have VUMT Deluxe, very handy plugin! I always have it on every channel, right after the sound source.

Every daw must have a stock EQ with mid side functionality I imagine. Just low cut the side. Ableton has 'Utility' with a bass mono button. Seems a waste for something so simple to have to have some specific 3rd party plugin to do it.

Indeed. Then again, something like the VUMT Deluxe has lots of simple but useful functions, not just a monomaker button and it's very cheap. You could probably do all the things it does with just the DAW's inbuilt functions and plugins, but it's so handy to have them in one place and always there. I used to use the Sonimus Satson, but the Klanghelm version is even more useful. I'm so used to having it on every channel that I can't live without it anymore.
