I don`t even understand that statement. "Quite a difference but almost nothing"
It`s a contradiction.
It`s a contradiction.

I cannot say what is different but there is somehow a little small "milimeter" difference
"Quite" was the wrong word sorry... I meant "very little"

I just got a Asgard 2 to pair with my DT-880 Pros which i couldn't get loud enough with my RME Fireface 400, wow what a difference an amp makes! I have nothing to compare to but really happy with the results

Oh it will take a little time to learn the sound. You don`t instantly use new monitors and understand them straight away, it takes your ears time.
Just reference lots of good material through those cans and you will get used to the depth and clarity.

Any recommendations for traveling headphones? I use HD600 at home, but currently I spend an awful lot of time in trains and need something to get shit done. So my requirements are:
- closed back
- decent isolation
- small form factor
- comfortable over long periods (5h+)
- reliable translation (won’t do full mixes on them, but I don't wanna experience any unwanted surprises when transferring material to the studio)
- easy to power
In-ear is not an option, so no Etymotics or Westones for me. Small and comfortable seems to be the biggest issue, otherwise there are a lot of options to choose from.

maybe focal spirits, Sony MDR7506, hd25(less reliable reproduction but good isolation)
Re: What headphones would you buy for £100-200ish ?
you requirements are hard to satisfy in a headphone. closed backs with small form factor will affect the reproduction quality especially in lows
Re: What headphones would you buy for £100-200ish ?
Yeah I know, but as I said: they’ll be just for travelling, so I’m ready to have some compromises. Thanks for your suggestions! The Sony was my first thought as well. I don’t like it’s sound signature too much, but it actually does translate pretty well. Also weight, design, comfort and price are great. I also know and do like the HD-25 for Djing, but I don’t trust it for producing/pre mixing. It also starts to hurt after an hour or so. The Focal looks a bit big, but I’ll add it to the list and check it out in real life.

In ears are the best option there. I know you said no, but they by far the best option.

Got replacements today, they're perfect. So much clarity around the mids and low-mids I was missing before. Its like that whole experience when you first buy monitors. I can actually hear where kicks sit now.
Might buy an amp though, the Focusrite 2i2 is about 3/4 way up for a "quiet comfortable level" but that leaves almost no extra volume if I did wan't it louder.
How do those headboxes work with the loop - I only see RCA outputs, my monitors are currently taking a balance 1/4inch jack - they do have RCA though but I've not used RCA for anything for years...!

Just use RCA. Balanced is kinda pointless on short cable runs anyway.
Re: What headphones would you buy for £100-200ish ?
Any cables you can recommend?
I always used to get a pretty bad hum with unbalanced/shit TRS cables that I fixed by buying some actually good balanced TRS cables. Whether it was the fact they were balanced or just a general build quality that fixed the hum, I don't know.
To complicate things, my soundcard doesn't have RCA out...

Redco does some good cables and I recommend the Asgard 2 amp

I just buy a reel of decent cable and have a stock of connectors and make up what I need to the correct length as I need it. Works out cheaper and better quality for you money in the long run. As long as you are handy with a hot iron.

I'm not even that experienced soldering and made a quality 12 channel snake with Motani and nuetrik connectors.
Also took apart my TG77 and installed a new blue backlight and desoldered a ground wire to get rid of a hum. Proud of that being a total noob with a soldering iron.

Were the AKG702's from Amazon by any chance? Got some for xmas and had a rattle in the right driver at around 20-30hz, sounds similar to your issues.Plyphon wrote:Bit annoyed - mine have a rattle

Apparently they're out of stock until February now too.... Great.
