Ns10m Studio

Post by Program »

Finally got a pair of these from eBay :D I still need an amp for them but that's coming soon too.
If there's any ns10 users here I'm curious on how you guys position them; horizontally, vertically, on table or maybe on stands etc?

Thanks!

I have a pair, but I use them only for a second reference while listening. They sound shit and all but they're handy for a "second opinion listening". Yamaha used to have a nice matching amp for these by the way, a 4 channel one but I forgot it's name sorry.

Hey Mattias, yes I've red a lot on how they're used as a reference usually. But since I'm coming from a shit computer speakers background, NS10s sound amazing to me lol. I'm going for an Art SLA2 amp.

Well I was a bit harsh there saying they sound like shit hehe, its not exactly true. They sound unforgiving & flat I guess..hence why I like to check my stuff in them at times. They really lack bass, I'd recommend you get another pair of monitors as well with a more forgiving attitude. It's nice to make electronic music with a touch of bass after all...hehe. If you like Yama I guess the HS80 speakers will be a good compliment to your NS10s!

About the positioning, they're not waveguide or anything so the positioning is rather crucial. I'd try with 60-70 cm distance between them and then 60-70 (the same as where you put the speakers) from the speakers to your head and the tweeter in ear height.

We're ns10m designed to be positioned on there side. So the writing on the front is horizontal ;)

They were famous because they had a flat sound.

Mine are horizontal model yes, i'm afraid i can't afford another pair of speakers just yet. So they'll have to do for now. Mattias what do you think would a subwoofer be a good choice to compliment them?

I toyed around with the idea of a sub for a while - and decided not to cos my room was probably too small. I've the HS50's and was gonna get the HS10 sub, or whatever its called. My room is 3.3m x 3.3m - so I'm sure there would be some nasty build up haha. I wish I had of got the HS80's now.. cos my bass starts tailing off at about 55hz on the HS50's.

Still - Its good to have some headphones to be able to check.

Hey Program, I have a pair of ns10, actually they are my only monitors and I have to subscribe what Mattias said on his first reply :)
they are (were) considered a standard in music industry for being flat and accurate but actually are totally useless for us if you want to produce elctronic or techno. cause they lack totally on the low ends. a good producer friend of mine has them paired with the native yamaha sub and he's pretty happy with it.
I suggest you to get a good headphone and some graphic analyser to check what's really happening down the spectrum.

mine are the old ones and sit horzontal but the new ones are vertical I believe.

try them and use them if you don't feel ok then sell them. be iconoclast :)

I hooked up my Yamaha hs50's with my Sony surround subwoofer, sounds awesome! Gives me great idea of what's going at the low end!

Yeah I think Yamaha would like you to spend an extra 432 to finish your monitoring! :x

A lot of people find them uncomfortable because they are voiced "Mid-forward" meaning the mid range is slight more in your face.
Great for sorting out mid-range detail, but a little taxing, and of course terrible bass response.
They were popular mainly due to radio being such a popular medium back in the day and for making radio mixes, they are the shit.
If it sounds good on those grot boxes it`ll sound good on anything, is the motto.

Wouldn`t recommend them for dance music, although they are fine at low levels.

I don't think there's anything wrong with these speakers myself. They sound awesome with a sub. But that's just my opinion.

Also being excellent in the mid range is not a downfall for dance music.

The problem is matching a sub correctly, getting your crossover correct for the speaker and the room etc.
Better have speakers that are built with matched low end drivers already then trying to patch in a sub and end up making things worse.
