Don`t despair just yet.....

I work as a mastering engineer and dealing with problems in the low end is fairly easy as there are generally few things going on down there, so compressing, or Eqing the low end to be beefier or rolling it off a touch etc is easy work for me, but dealing with some fucked up mooshy mid range problem is always more troublesome.

Using the NS10`s will mean you have to work hard to get your mid range sounding sweet, which is really where all the mud and larks happen, it is also where all the interesting stuff happens. You can always do a headphone check for bass just to make sure it isnt way over the top, and then at least when it comes to handing your work over for finalisation, the most problematic area should be the area you have the most sorted.

In theory.......

Definitely better to have the sub that was designed for the speakers. Can't see me affording that sub for a while.

Using the Sony sub definitely hasn't made the matter worse as I can now at least hear the sub bass, whether it be a little less than perfect.

there is a hs10 sub, it partners the latest monitors and is about £400 quid, so your kudos points remain ;)

There was no official sub designed to go with NSM10m`s, check your history.
People tended to use the Yamaha NS-W2 but it wasn`t designed specifically for the NS10`s. the NS10`s were designed as bookshelf hi-fi speakers, they just happened to get used for nearfield due to their characteristics.

There are many subs you can use, but none of them specifically matched to the NS10, besides, using them with subs kinda defeats the whole point of them.

Yes, conclusion: Get a second pair of speakers and use the NS10s as your crucial reference speakers, no sub is to prefer.
Sorry to shut down your purchase though...

Nah it's fine. The main reason I got them was to challenge myself to make better mixes since all the reviews rate them as honest speakers. Will eventually get another pair then.
