What effect filters low on the mixer

Post by disect »

Hey,

Last time I went to awakenings I saw Ben klock and Rodhad. Amazing expereince and it gave me alot of inspiration for mixing. What occured at me is that sometimes to create tension they whole throw the filter open and 4 or 8 beats before the kick would come in again they would throw some sort of effect over the filtered kick which made the sound thicker, like you knew that kick was gonna drop soon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiOG0Ov12wY, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGWL7YI_2rI in both videos you can see Ben Klock and Rodhad using it. In the first one you see rodhad at 23:17 using it. I think the latter one, the boiler Room with Ben Klock, shows best what I mean with the effect. I know this forum is about production but I've been hunting some time for this and I just bought a second hand DJM 800 today. Unfortonaly the filter only sweeps. Anyone knows what effect this is and if it's on the DJM 800 too? If not, what mixers do have it. It seems to me the Xone 92 has from the video. Cheers !

Why the fuck is that toss bag stood right behind Rodhad wearing a fucking ipod? Or am I just mistaking some sort of ear plugs for an ipod? Either way, that guy needs to man up a bit. Part of clubbing as a youngster is getting some mild hearing damage. Fucking pussy!

Just tried to watch the second video of Klock, but frankly the 30 second un-skipable advert made me fuck it off. At a a guess it's probably some sort of echo, delay, flange (ohh god how that effect was done to death back in the DJM600's glory days), filter effect. Or maybe just some eq tweaking?

Allen & Heath Xone-series mixers have filters in them. They're used a lot by techno DJ's.

IMO. In the first video there are 3 channels playing after the low cut. He does tweak the eq on the other channels a bit. Maybe that is where the extra lowend comes from ? Maybe some light reverb effects too. Just guessing, I have no experience with mixing and dj sets :p

Without checking; it should be either the HPF or LPF filter on the A&H Xone mixer right? Perhaps they increased resonance or LFO the signal also.

just by pushing the gain on the low end you can make any kick sound a lot "thicker",
especially if you just took off some high end because then it will only get more highlighted because the low end draws more attention.

I once blew a rather big speaker during a DJ set by just using my bass EQ to "accentuate" some kicks so hard on an old trance tune to make it sound as if you heard a slower broken beat pattern rather than a fast 4/4 pattern.
Just pushed it a bit too hard.

the human mind is somehow programmed to believe that loud always equals better.
It's a very annoying flaw, but at times it's a handy thing to abuse.

just watched that rodhead video at the moment you mentioned.
man I would have ellbowed that dickhead with the smartphone.

that whole boiler room thing, time and time again it makes me cringe.
all the hipsters trying to be as close to the DJ as possible,
and then they all start making selfie's and try to look interesting on camera. :?
