## Subsekt Production Tips: Video Series ##

Post by Lost to the Void »

Here`s the first production tutorial.
It centers on compression, and I explain the topology and how it really works, clearing up any myths and confusion, and then giving some demonstrations on the functionality of a compressor within the context of kickdrums and compression.

thanks Steve, your compression tutorial is wonderfully done. You explain a very misunderstood topic and show how simple it is. your way of explanation is super understandable. best regards and keep it up.

Great topic. Something I don't really understand so I hardly ever bother using compressors. Will check this out tomorrow and follow along. Really pleased your using free and stock plugins too, nice one!

Excellent, that was! I have never come across a tutorial that explains the working of a compressor in such a clear way, with A/B and all. You can read all your manuals front to back, but this tutorial is just gonna stick! Using your ears remains the most important, but now I understand better where I went wrong or what I did right.
Very happy having watched this, it feels more than learning just a new trick, it feels more like "finally starting to really get it". So, looking forward to something in the same vain on more complex material like a mix, or indeed a sound design tutorial.

Thanks heaps, Steve!

That's a great vid Steve. Learned a lot from that. I do some of that , kinda inconsistently do those things ffll; which is part of the trial & error of my approach. Lots of food for practical thought. It's important to have a reliable system & a solid methodology. Thanks for the insight.

Appreciate the time it took to do man.. You've got a great way of explaining stuff. All these vids are v.emjoyable. Cool to hear your voice again 👍👍

Looking forward to this one. I am the same with compression on kicks. I generally only use Ableton's Drum Buss.

Really enjoyed the other videos too.

Thanks Steve.

Yeah, dunno. I've been getting a little bit sick the drumbuss recently.

Think I need to transfer some of the vid points to it.

Been using the (free) colourlimiter in m4l , which can sound quite subtle or extreme depending on what you do.

Yeah know what you mean. I have recently gone back to not using compression and only using one kick layerd with a mid tom to fill out the frequencies. And then using iZotope Trash 2. That really livens it up. Have to tone it down because it is quite aggressive.

Will be interesting to watch the video.

Hey Steve, just a Q.

After adding more attack, of course, theres possibly gonna be a spike in the transient . Is that when a limiter should be used after the comp ; to lower the transient?

How spiky should the average kick, snare or random transient be before it's a problem?

Well, it's a problem when it's a problem.
In dance music a good mix down will average 9db of dynamic range. So if your master buss starts getting higher than this then it might a case of going back and looking for erroneous transients.
Sometimes a good clipper it better than a limiter when it comes to deal with compression enhances transient peaks.

👍

Cheers Steve. Found it useful following this today & looking at smexascope(??).. just to visualise what was happening.

Good, consistent way of getting that triangle decay shape kick, with a decent transient at the front.

Would you say that it's somewhat easier to control the boom, maybe.. Using the compressor, over eq'ing it all away? I think this is something that I neglect to do.

Have to say thanks again for the 'lookahead' stuff. It changes the way the compressor acts as well as sounds I think. The tonal change can be subtle & different / useful.

Free clipper.

I usually find hats are the culprit for spikes.

Really nice tutorial, everything so well sorted and logic. That's gold for everyone who wants to learn from scratch.

Even veterans don't really know how compressors actually work. There aren't many sources that really talk about compressor topology. That's why I did it.
