http://www.abletonop.com/ features occasional gems like http://www.abletonop.com/2012/02/how-to ... ue-sounds/ which has a bit more value in the comments than the article...

Hey mlswte. I'm finding this post very useful as I'm thinking about getting into producing techno.
I'd like to inform you that the first few links aren't working at the moment.
Can I ask what Software would you recommend a beginner to use?
I really just want to make some nice loops so I can play sets with some nice live elements too, ya know?

Thanks hound I'll check the links!

Tbh the easiest software to use would probably be ableton. And it's great for making loops. It probably also has the most tutorial on the net and YouTube, there are literally thousands.

FOUND THE FOLLOWING:

Track Production Excel Sheet

This sheet is intended to be used as you produce a track. By filling in details as you work, you can note & visualise the areas that need attention.

There is a section on the right hand side where you can put down the dominant frequencies of the Instruments in your track.. Such as Bass 60-100 Hz, Kick 75-150 Hz, Motif 1 500-1500 Hz, Motif 2 1750-3000 Hz, Percussion 1 250-1000 Hz etc..

You can therefore easily go in and use an EQ to dip where the other instruments are dominant.

Track arrangement Sheet

This is a Grid - Split into 8 bar sections. The idea here is that it is similar to the arrange page of your DAW. If you wish you can actually draw in the structure of the main elements so that you can visualise how the track is made.

Track Analysis Sheet

Designed to help you breakdown other producers tracks.

I;m only responsible for the Track Analysis sheet, cos I was sick of scribbling on the back of envelopes. I used to sit in the library in college and listen to tracks on my Ipod when I was bored & it was just a way of keeping track. I was going through a bad bout of Loopitis at the time.. so I was trying to help myself :)

A chap inthe US seen the original sheet & made his own version & I obliged & UL'd them for him. Personally I think the one with all the freqs is a bit overkill. Life is too short. But fair play if anyone uses that particular one.

Fuck knows they've been DL'd a lot. Wish I had 50p for each one lol

Now, this site isn't specificly aimed at a certain music genre but you'll be able to find a lot of information & videos on EQing, compression and mastering. What i like about Ian's approach is that he cares a lot about dynamics and preserving them. If you need a good advice on above topics, check it out.

sonicacademy.com is finally starting to be a little more interesting for beginner+ producers with the artist tip series. For me still some new things, maybe the more experienced producer won't think they're useful. Unfortunately it's mostly a paid for site. The forum can be useful too though, and thats free.
