I think I found my drums....

Post by breakz »

and they come from Jomox !!!!

Really impressed by Jomox, although I know the company since the 90's I don't know why but I never spend enough time to check those drum machines deeply.Recently I downloaded some free samples (jomox samples,airbase,xbase09,xbase999 and the rest of them) from random users on the net and really liked them. The kick drums cut through the mix. Then I bought those high quality samples from Wave Alchemy
http://www.wavealchemy.co.uk/drum_tools_01_deluxe/pid58

and will stick with these for a long time( I hope).

the xbase999 sounds very good !!! new is 1300eur. and used around 800-850eur. but for now I prefer to use the samples since I can scan them very quickly.

what do you think of Jomox ? any other Jomox sample packages around except from Wave Alchemy ?

I had an Xbase 09 for a while. Wasn't too impressed with it, although it fired some mean kick drums.

I think the thing with samples are that they can take a bit of processing during the recording process to get those results.

The thing that used to annoy me about working with samples is some of the unwanted processing such as reverb tails

If you like the jomox kick drums get the mbase 11 or 01. You can dial in the kick you want very quickly.

I used to have an Airbase99 years ago.
Wasn't using it enough cause I hated the crap (1 rack unit) interface,
so I sampled the complete unit before I sold it.
I barely used the samples afterwards though, funny enough, even if the whole recording, cutting and slicing took me many days back then.

a friend of mine recently bought another airbase, and now controls it with that Max4live tool.

I got an Xbase888 about 3 years ago, the model with the nice knobs that you could only get when ordering from him directly. Never regretted getting it. First I used it on everything, then I stopped using it for a while, and now I'm using it a lot again. :)
Not gonna sell this one, that's for sure.
I just saw on his website he stopped making them.
A shame since it's basically an Xbase999 without the X-filter, so it's a cheaper solution.

Jurgen does make great sounding instruments...
Back in the 90's, he got asked by people like Mauritz Von Oswald to mod their 909's so the bass would get even heavier. I guess that's quite a nice reference in techno country... :D

Used to own a Jomox Xbase 999, didn't care for it much. The sound was decent in isolation, but it was difficult to mix and use in a song context, it somehow stole all the frequency space, but at the same time it didn't sound full and rich, like a 909 or an 808.

It was also very difficult to sell, despite being in mint condition. Took me like 6 months and several price drops before I found a buyer.

You lot would be surprised to find out which producers use the 09 and 999 as their main drums :D

People use the mbase as well. You'll be surprised.

The fact that it doesn't sound like a 808 or a 909 is the very reason to use it.

I even think someone posted a picture of a high profile producer in another thread. Might of been UNIT or NICKNACK. There in the list was a jomox.

Yeah Porc uses the Jomox stuff. He has the MBase & XBase. I post a link to his studio in Attack Mag.

I suppose the Jomox stuff is alright. I have a friend who had the XBase 09 sounded alright to me. Clearly it doesn't pack as much punch on its own as a 909 or 808 (at least not without some processing) but it can still do the job. I saw him do 2 or 3 live shows with it and it sounded pretty good over the PA.

Well besides the point. It shouldn't influence anyone even if the best of the best use a product. With that being said, Xbase is fucking brilliant. Wipes the floor with the TR909.

I thought it was Ben sims lol.

There you go. Porc uses a jomox. You can't really argue with that.

It's not what you have, but how you use it..

Porc also has a Volca.

I definitely agree with it's not what you have but how you use it. I think Porc is processing the shit out those machines with Ableton and whatever else he's got on his lappy. Might be running it through that Poco Dbl Rat.

Bens Simms doesn't have any gear left it all got stolen from his studio couple weeks back. Here is the list:

1x Gibson SG Guitar (1963, White )
1x Korg Electribe ESX1
1x Korg Electribe ES1
2x Macbook Pro Laptop (1 silver, 1 Black)
1x Squire Bass Guitar
1x Takamine Acoustic Guitar
1x Roland Jx8p Synth
1x Korg Kaos Pad 3
1x Native Instruments Maschine (Boxed)
1x UAD2 FX Card (Boxed)
2 x SE Electronics z3000a
2x Pioneer CDJ2000 Nexus players
1x Zoom H4N Recorder
1x Korg X3 Synth

Nothing really spectacular there. 63 Gibson is likely worth something.

And how you use something relates to your skill level. It's too wide of an argument to narrow over which machine is good and which isn't. They're all good in their own ways. All opinion and blah blah. Just make good music :D

Just my personal opinion, but even just 909 samples in my Octatrack wipes the floor with the Jomox 999.

I have a modded xbase 09. It enables you to load extra samples instead of the stock sampled ones, oh etc.
I find it hard to believe the kick can't be dialed in to be as heavy or heavier than on a 909, whatever that means.
