Also check out the Red Means Recording instructional series. The Digitone and the "so you want to make a sound" vid has really helped open up my head on FM/ subtractive synthesis and Jeremy gives a lot of reasons why things work in a simple, clear, well performed and often times witty approach to synthesis and electronic music.

Just came across this video, and I think it actually explains how to do a lot of stuff that people who are new to techno, is curious about. I don't think there is anything in the video that isn't covered more deeply in the archive section here, but it is told in a very informative way

Has this been posted before? Even if it has, it's worth posting again for people who haven't seen it.

It's a video of Randomer walking through how he might make a kick drum. That's interesting and great, but after watching it for the first time a few months ago I've gotten much more out of it than that.

One example would but that I found if you vary the length and pitch of the midi controlling the kick sample, you can create some incredibly groovey, heavy bass drum/bass line combos that sound quite unlike anything that I usually make.

This tutorial was a great starting point for a lot of other experimentation.

Just liked his approach to the drums and breaks, no crazy layering, or "so i throwed an fucking ton of effects on my drums to make them wide and crunchy, sidechained everythin and after removed mud and harsh frequencies with 5 EQ's, slamed it to a ssl emulation just to make it more warmer"

I listened to this and while it's an interesting trick I thought it sounded really bad. Have you managed to apply it to something and have it sound good?

I havent try a kick drum but i tried a few percussion convolving some melodic elements. You can make cool sounds for and sure some of them will sound alien and otherworldy. This may be a good opr bad thing depending on the context.

This is wicked. So many ideas in this from just using some of Ableton's basic built in midi devices.

John Selway is always really good at explaining things. Granular synthesis this time - he uses it completely different than from what I do - I always take metallic sound--->now-it's-a-pad
