First Synth
First Synth
Hey people,
What do you recommend would be a good synth to wet the feet with? What was your 1st one?
I'm making techno obviously.. but I'm sure all synths are pretty suitable for the task. Ideally would like something pretty flexible, with good filters. I'm willin to spend around £600-700.
Old or new - whats decent?

Re: First Synth
My first synth was a Juno 60 but I was in a band then
Then I got a Novation Basstation - unfornutaly the basstation died on me and i sold the Juno
I also had a ESi32 sampler which was my main weapon hooked up to an atari running cubase - those were the days

Re: First Synth
There's so many! And many are good as well.
I'd go for something by Korg or Waldorf or a classic Juno. I'm guessing your only after a hardware unit and have several plugins already? I personally love to be flexible with vintage hardware plus new exciting software that doest emulate the analog goodies but rather make something on their own. How complex should it be?
Korg MS20 is a classic you can't go wrong with, same with Korg MS2000 which I own personally but its far from as screaming as its older brother. Waldorf Q is nice as well and the old Juno's needs no real presentation hehe. Thats those I can think of right away that I would recommend.

Re: First Synth
the korg ms20 would be the ultimate synth for me i would also like a minimoog but they are really expensive. my first proper synth was a tb303. i just had to have one. my intensions were just to have the 303 and a drum machine and make acid house lol
i think roland gear is definately worth checking out. ive come close to buying a juno 106 on a few occasions but opted for something different (and cheaper) the jx3p.
i like to have lots of knobs and faders to play with and ive always been curious about the novation supernova and quasimidi sirrius. there not classic analogue synths but still look interesting and there not that expensive.

Re: First Synth
Never tried any Novation synth to be honest, any opinion on those?
Semi-crappy video demo of MS2000:

Doesn't say that much about its use for techno production but I've used it in lots of tracks the last 10 years and I love it.

Re: First Synth
Hi Mattias
My only advice would be don't buy a Novation Bass Station in the mid 90s as your first synth, and especially if you don't have a sequencer
That's a lesson I still regret learning.

Re: First Synth
These guys have a lot of live jams on youtube and you can hear some of the synths mentioned in this thread in action.

A couple more synths to consider. I've had my eye on some of these for a while and I'm going get around to picking up the first two and one of the monos at some point (when / if I can ever afford them):
Desktop Evolver - http://www.davesmithinstruments.com/products/med/
Waldorf Blofled - http://www.waldorfmusic.de/en/blofeld.html
Some decent seeming modern analogue monos:

I used to have the Bass Station as VST, I never liked it.

Re: First Synth
i had a novation "a-station" not that long ago. it was cheap, paid about £100 for it. but i liked it. the only reason why i dont have it anymore is because it stopped working but it was really cool. thats the reason why im interested in the supernova.

Re: First Synth
Yea good advice, I nearly forgot about it.
DX7 or DX100. Nasty to program though.

Re: First Synth
I've had a tx81z for over a year now and the thing is still a mystery to me
Re: First Synth
Haha the joy of FM synthesis. Those cryptic modules with scary display didn't help to solve the mystery.

Re: First Synth
i put FM synthesis into the too hard basket ages ago and got the tx81z because i though that would motivate me to learn it. it's still effectively a very limited rompler at this stage tho
