Sub bass clicking

Post by LuigiTozzii »

Hello everyone I'm going mad with this problem since long and I would like to get your help on this:
I am trying to make a continous sub bass with operator but It is clicking every time the loop restarts.
This problem could be solver just making a very long loop during like for 6 minutes but if i use a sidechain on this bass it
wil start clicking again.
I've searched on the net for a clear solution but couldn't find anything really helping.
they say it is ADSR problem but I tryed manipulating those parameters and nothing is changing.

HELP

Make sure you're editing the amplitude (Amp Env.) and not the filter's envelope. Other than that, I'd say use a longer attack / decay. Also, if you're using a compressor, either sidechained or plain, that can cause the sound to click as well.

Cheers

Hi Luigi,

If you're using Live's default compressor for sidechaining try switching to FF2; FF1 is the default mode and it can cause clicking on the ducked audio.

That's a well known und unfixed operator bug since ages and they couldn't even fix it on the Live 9 update. You'll find at least 3 new "operator subbass is clicking"-threads every month at the Ableton forum  . No one knows why Operator is clicking when retriggering low freq sinewaves. It helps a bit with longer attack settings but the click won't fully disappear.
But i couldn't care less because apart from that Operator is a fuckin' beast of a synth and my most used softsynth for sure.

Luigi why don't you take Ableton's "Analog" synth instead for sine subbass (with "Analog" there is no clicking)? A sinewave is a sinewave in the end ;).

For your info: You could do your 6 min. long MIDI-clip with operator for subbass. Then when you will do the sidechain-voodoo,switch Ableton's Compessor to "FF1 Mode" (it's set to FF2 by default). The "click" should be gone now when the sidechain triggers.

Edit: me and Program postet at the same time :D ....@ Program: FF2 is the default mode, you have to change it to FF1...

i try it now
thx <3

edit:Damn i have ableton9 and there is no ff1 to fff2 mode!
and the compressor still clicking,I will try with analog!

edit2:Okay it is still clicking with analog and I'm going really mad with this.

So the problem is ableton's compressor and his sidechain?any other compressor I can use instead??

thanks in advice

Definitely check the Attack & Release on the main ADSR.

Can also happen when you are using a 2nd ASDR to mod a filter, so you could potentially have to adjust the A & R on that too.

I'm sure that too much sustain can give a troublesome click sometimes. Keep your envelopes as short as they need to be.

With the Ableton comp, I do the same thing.. switch to a different type than default - and it usually goes away if adjusting the other usual controls makes no difference.

I dont think theres a backwards compatibility button / option in the compressor in L9, back to L8.

There is one if you have an old project with a L8 Compressor. You see a little button on the top right of the comp that says "Upgrade" - press it & the old controls are gone & you have a L9 compressor.

As far as I've seen so far anyway..

This... Load Live 8 compressor in Live 9,then right click on the header of the compressor and choose "set as default". This way you can use the improvements of Live 9 comp with the nice Feed Forward/Feedback modes from Live 8 comp (as long as you don't click "Upgrade" afterwards of course) 8-) .

Yeah.. I've got a L8 comp saved in my list. Not as default though haha - Suppose I should. I find working with the old comp quicker for whatever reason.

(except reinstall Live 8,create a live set with Live 8 compressor. Then open this Live Set in Live 9,right-click on the header and choose "set as default. AND NEVER....NEVER NEVER EVER click on "Upgrade" afterwards or you have to do this shit again  )
