First time purchase.. Monitors.

Post by Dirk L »

In the market for some new monitors finally.

Have a beat up set of Tannoys for years that double up as my mixing set-up.. but I want to get something decent. What does everyone have and recommend?

Guess I'm looking to spend around £400 max. Whats everyone using?

Have an Audio 8 Card already, so I'm sorted for that.

I have KRK Rokit 8RG monitors with the 10" sub. Great sounds once it's broken in and you have the best sound treatment you can get.

You REALLY need to go to a shop and have a listen!

I compared various krk's, Yamaha hs 80's / 50's and some others I can't think of the names.

Listening to monitors live it was night and day for me. the hs80's were the flattest. It's all personal preference and you may prefer something else, but you need to listen to them!

Good point about listening before you buy. I did that with mine but I come out of the shop with Behringer 2030a's :-/ They did sound sweet to me tho and seemed to have the flattest and most balanced sound. I took a Pounding Grooves track in for reference :)

Next time I buy monitors I think I'll go to the shop, listen to everything in my price range, then come home and do some research before I buying.

I had a set of KRK monitors, but sold them last week, I found myself using headphones more often, I didnt have the resources to treat a room to use as a studio, so the speakers never sounded right, take into consideration the space you are using.

Good point about treatment! Monitor placement and room treatment is just as important as what monitors you buy

thats true. i thought the bass response on mine was really bad, but after moving house and setting them up in a bigger and less square room they sound a lot better.

I've HS50's.. Will get the HS80's at some point.

I like them.. only gripe with smaller monitors is that they curve off towards the bottom, so you cant really hear the lows - hence the need for some decent h'phones that;ll go the extra hz for you. I wish i had of got the 80's now. At the time, I thought that they'd be too big for my room, any room that I would have. But after hearing larger monitors in other people studios over the years, I personally dont think theres too much to worry about. If they can record bands.. make techno.. release records.. mix for other people & master.. then you dont need optimum conditions.

If your room is an empty box, then fill it up a bit to dampen it down a bit. Theres a lot you can do without having to go the whole hog.

I know you need treatment & do the best you can.. but I think that you can still hear a fk of a lot more on bigger monitors at lower volumes that smaller ones. And in fairness, y'd have it at medium most of the time. Those Mopads are wicked & sorted out a lot of the booming bass for me. You can get cheaper ones from Thomann, which do the same job. Perfect.

Still.. you need to get a decent set of h'phones too.. so if you dont already, maybe put some cash aside from that for them. I have them on around my neck the whole time & keep checking as I go.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the responses. I went with the RP6's in the end. I got to listen to them in the store and my friend already has a set so I was able to recall my experiences listening on them too. I really wanted to get the 8's but my budget wouldnt stretch it.. cos my body is used to eating hahaha

I also need some new monitors since mine where destroyed during the move. But the problem i am facing is have good near field monitors which give a good responds all over the freq range and using them for dj-ing. I tried some already from friends and i must say it is difficult to find speakers the sound good for both usage..
Any tips?

If you are very serious, I would wait and save up more £400 won`t get you anything that good, in fact for that money you might actually be better off spending the money on some triple driver in ear monitors.
You could probably get a set of Rockit6`s, or see what you can get second hand.
But I would save up a little more, go up to the £600 range.

In general the rule "you get what you pay for" applies here. The KRK Rokit series is a real "techno studio" speaker these days and they're good for the price. I own a pair of KRK Rokit 8 only for reference listening in a lesser expensive monitor series and they're much bang for the buck. I'd go for the VXTs though if I were to buy KRK. Don't buy too big speakers unless you have big a room. Subs are generally difficult to get right in a bedroom studio situation, lean away from getting one.
That's some advice I can think of right now.

Yeah.. forget about the sub. I was gonna get one ages ago.. but after hearing a cheap surround sound system that a mate had in his bedroom (with a tiny sub) - I changed my mind. Too much.

Anyway - I dont think my family would like it if I got a Sub :)

They hate me enough already for sneaking off down to the room without shaking their teeth out as well lol

I'll never give up my Sub, especially since I have four eight-foot OC703 bass traps in my corners keeping it under control. I have two KRK Rokit 8RG monitors and they sound quite good broken in. Good investment for the money for sure.
