Thanks for all the replies fellas. Had them for a little bit now. I realise that I could have got something a few steps up but i needed to get something now. Besides I have to put a cap on it.

In a while when I know what I want and need a bit better, I'll trade up. But for now, job's a good 'un :)

Having been through 4 sets of monitors in the last 3 years ive learned a couple things. First off if your room is not treated all monitors will sound like shit wether they are $20 or $2000. There are little things you can do to treat your room. The internet is a great free source for this kind of info. Now assuming your room isnt horrible to work in , in terms of accoustics. Then I would recommend saving your money and buying a pair of decent monitors, you can thank me later. There is a huge difference between $400 monitors and $1000 monitors. I started off with M-Audio bm5xa(cant remember if this was the exact model), then came the yorkville ysmp2's, then the krk rokit 8's, and finally the Dynaudio bm5a mkii's. And let me tell you the price's increase every upgrade. But the difference in sound, detail, imaging is like night and day. I wish i knew this before i bought my first set of monitors. If i did have this info i wouldve just mixed on headphones till i could afford decent monitors. If you can wait and save your money then thats definitely what i would do. Just my 2 cents.

I totally agree that you get what you pay for. But you dont have to have all the fancy gear to produce. I know someone that mixes his tracks on a set of hifi speakers and his mixes sound spot on. I could believe it when he told me. I would of course have a set of 3 grand monitors if I could afford them lol ha ha

It's taken me ages to start learning how to use my monitors properly but could've probably been a lot faster if I had some discipline. They're nowhere near top of the line and neither are my head phones.

For a while it was all about doing things consistently and making sure that if I'm critically listening to other peoples tracks I'm doing at the same volume all the time. After a while I started to get a sense of how different frequencies are represented in a lot of music.

I used to wonder why bass in my loops was so overpowering and it's turned out to be because I didn't know anything at all about mixing at the time and nothing was balanced.
