Thought of something else regarding the etymonics...

Would they be a useful tool for live performance so you can hear yourself properly, or would they inhibit your ability to play with/against the room's acoustics?

I always take my er4s to live performances.
I don't always need them, but I always have them.
Generally I turn off the booth monitors and work from the rig.

Steve, i saw that u posted before in this thread about replacing your AKG 701 with this brand in-ear phones, how u think this new model could be compared to this style of headphones?
I have a AKG 712 and im thinking about buying this ones.

I haven't replaced my 701s. I have a pair in the mastering room that I use to double check bass distortion.
I prefer the new er4s to produce with though.

I'm not sure I understand your question. You are thinking about replacing your 712s with er4s?

Yes, i was thinking about replacing or buying a pair of er4s to extra reference, they seem to have a solid frequency response and isolating external noise very well...
You think it would be a improvement? Also i like the ideia of taking them to the gigs to reference the live act if needed...

AKG 702 for me, way better than DT's and Sennheiser's. Only ones I like as much if not more are the Focal Pro's but the ear pads are too small....

Well, they are stunningly good. Best phones I have used for production.
But
They are in ears, not everyone gets on with in ears.
For me the total Immersion, sound isolation and sheer audio fidelity make it a no brainer, and I am fine with in ears.

Nice to hear that, im also fine with in-ears if they are comfortable...
Do u think the Hf5 could be very good as the er4s? They seem to be not very far one from another in the specs for the half of the price..

No, they are consumer headphones and the specs and performance aren't as good as the old er4s let alone the new versions. Would rather use akg 701s then hf5s for production.
There is a reason that they are half the price.

I'm going to be travelling extensively next year and will take along a compact studio set-up (likely just laptop, X-key, 2i2, H4N). I'll be producing and mixing on headphones, and want to cut down on bulk wherever possible. I figured the ER4s would be a good solution - do the XRs over-emphasize bass? Would I be better off with SRs for mixing?

I also considered AKGs but don't really want to take a headphone amp with me.

Thanks!~

Well, when I got trial pairs I found the extended low end response of the XR`s to be perfect for me, no over emphasis at all (etymotic don`t do things like over emphasis, they are all about accuracy with the ER4 series).
I found the SR`s to be a little too slim in the lows to get that mix immersive effect I like. I have small ear canals, so this might be a part of it.
The proof is in the pudding, my mixes are translating very well and aren`t slim on bass from me undercompensating for the phones having too much bass, so I would say they are perfect for music that requires more detail in the lows.

Thanks for the help, I've ordered some XRs so will see how I get on with them.

Pretty interesting:

The XRs are awesome btw Void, thanks for the advice. Well impressed with the sound accuracy and the bass is nice and compact. Particularly surprised with how well they locate and separate panned sounds in the mix.

I'm using them straight into my 2i2 - would a dedicated headphone amp increase performance any further? They sound class already.

You don't really need an amp for those puppies.

If you're "seriously" travelling, don't bother taking that crap.

Practically it'll become a ballache to take/pack every time to move (often), it'll get damaged, make you a bigger target for thieves (people in hostels can be scum)

But most importantly you'll be too busy experiencing life to ever sit down and do any meaningful work.

I took a laptop with me and whilst it was handy at times it was a ballache every time I moved somewhere new. Only time I used it was to book flights/day trips.

Plus you can produce fully in the box these days. Just get a cheap pair of headphones you can plug straight in or one of those compact DAC/amps and be done with it.

As far as Amps go, Can anyone recommend a good solution for this? A lot of great amps out there and various price levels....thanks!

I use the Pro-Ject Headbox S, which is really nice. http://store.hificorner.co.uk/pro-ject- ... o_s=gplauk
There are plenty others out there, but a lot of high priced snake oil you need to watch out for.

So, after reading about Etymotic on here I recently bought a pair of ER3XR as I'm traveling quite often and it's just too much of hassle to bring regular cans. Wasn't expecting much really but wow.. These are some seriously good headphones. :) Thanks for the tip!
