Return Tracks as Busses
Has anyone tried using return channels as busses for Drums | Synths | Bass?
Seems like it would be a neat way of hiding the busses when arranging. When using the group function, I find it a bit of a space hogger when I'm looking at all tracks stacked to get an overview of the track I'm working on.
Just a thought...

Seems like a sensible idea, I might try that. I know what you mean about groups, on Ableton they're a bit awkward to work with in the arrange view but I like being able to process things together.

I think you would have to send all the drum tracks as "send only" with the send volume turned all the way up to the appropriate Return channel.
Maybe its more hassle than its worth, just an idea...

Re: Return Tracks as Busses
do you mean as opposed to using an audio track to bus?
i always use the return tracks in this way. usually goes bass, kick, Porc, synth, then a few for delay(s), reverb(s)

Yeah as opposed to using either a dedicated audio channel or grouping the tracks you want to bus. It might make it easier to hide those channels then when you are arranging so you can just focus on the individual tracks.
Kind of like the way logic works.

yep totally. also the way a mixing console is laid out, with the bus faders to the right of the channel faders

Do you use the "sends only" function from your tracks to the return channels?

coool.... think I'm gonna give it a bash on the next track
Re: Return Tracks as Busses
I might try this too. I find the groups in Ableton a bit unwieldy. Having them grouped into returns instead seems like it could be a better workflow.

i used to do it many years ago while transitioning from fl studio because it was more or less the way i used the mixer in that program.
