Just bought my first clipper (StandardClip), could use some help

Post by Barfunkel »

I know how clippers work in theory, but just don't really know how to apply it in practice. Any tips would be most welcome!

Isn't it Steve who clips his kicks a tiny bit before they hit the compressor? I did that at a time, and you can really make them beefy this way :)

Clippers are the indispensable secret of modern music really.

I use standardclip literally ever day in the mastering room.

There are a few ways to use it, so I do suggest reading the manual.

Classic mode is great, it's clean hard clipping with soft clipping you can dial in with the saturator.
So you can round off the hard clipping, which gives a more pleasing peak reconstruction.
But if you want to transparently nip out a few peaks before hitting a limiter or something, then hard clip on a very very gentle setting is all you need.
Softclip mode is handy for so much stuff.
In kicks as mentioned.
I use it a lot to tame hi hats as they usually have massive transient spikes.
Also handy to sit after an EQ if you are doing heavy cutting and stuff, as you can generate transients spikes with heavy EQ due to phase rotation.

Do you ever clip the 2bus in your own productions or only in mastering?
