Reverb on your returns
Reverb on your returns
I high pass the reverb on my returns, in fact I high pass all of my returns. The reverb I cut everything below about 350Hz, I find everything below that just adds mud and rumble.
Anyone else do this? Anyone know a good reason why I shouldn't do this?

Re: Reverb on your returns
all the times Ant . only time i dont do it is when i make a reverb kick or bass sounds. Then its full freq all the way down.
Cut that stuff out leaves more room for everything else. thats why people do it

Re: Reverb on your returns
ok ive not ever used send and return , dont even know how it works. lol. noobish
Re: Reverb on your returns
I've heard of a few people that dont bother using them on sends either. To be fair, I usually only use them on a send to route maybe claps or hats or something to them & have a few fx before the reverb, to make it more of a sound effect, than a treatment.
I usually have them all as inserts - varying in % wet.

Re: Reverb on your returns
I use send and return quite a bit for reverb, varying length at 100% wet. I then send channels at varying amounts which then acts as a wet/dry amount on the channel really. I usually do it to save CPU as I have a few hungry plugs on a computer that really could do with an update.
One thing that sometimes makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong is when I see pro producers Ableton projects in pictures or videos and they have about 7-8 returns on the go for one track. It makes me wonder what effects/plugs they have on them. I've never seen the need for that many

Re: Reverb on your returns
Johnlad, I often get to 7 returns.
I always have these:
1. Drum delay
2. Short Reverb
3. Long Reverb
4. Low Freq Parallel compression
5. High Freq Parallel compression
Then I also might have one with a ping pong, and one with a filter delay or distortion or anything really.

Re: Reverb on your returns
Hmmm fair enough. They're usually stuff that I add to the channels individually apart from the reverb and compression. Compression on the returns I have used plenty in the past, but it's been that long since I got anywhere near finishing anything I've not used in a long while!

i like them as inserts, but one thing that bugs me is why only 12 returns in ableton

Re: Reverb on your returns
James, what on earth are you doing that needs more than 12 returns?
It sounds like anarchy to me.

Re: Reverb on your returns
rarely use returns for reverb. i like a drier sound meself to be honest. i might have one for a big reverb for fx but thats it. in ableton a nice trick is when you group and have the insert fx on the grouped channel and not the nested channels. this means theyre all being effected at the same time
if you automate a send to the reverb from one of the plain grouped channels, you will get a version of the sound goin to the reverb without the groups fx on them. dependin on how many fx you have on the grouped channel, the plain channels audio can sound different. it often sounds like a new part to these ears.

Re: Reverb on your returns
i have the send with reverbs in my productions. they give it a nice together feeling when you listen. i dont think you can get that without.

Ha ha yes it is quite. It's not just having reverbs either, like loads of different effect chains going on. It's just experumebtingAnt wrote:James, what on earth are you doing that needs more than 12 returns?

Re: Reverb on your returns
I end up with about 5 or 6 sends, Large hall, medium hall & small (plate), then maybe another large verb with a delay (grain delay or fab filter), overdrive & other types of distortion, I'd run various hits through (kick, bass & lead) and resample to capture the send then reverse & sidechain etc etc, you can get some cool textures/astmos, results may vary tho
Then the other two for a percussive delay & compression.
The automation can get quite hairy at times and I can end up staring at the screen completely lost in a world of shit lol.

Re: Reverb on your returns
interested in this approach. It raised some (so many!) noob questions for me. It would be great if you had some answers.Ant wrote: 1. Drum delay

You apply the same delay to the entire kit? Usually i've placed a unique delay on each element as my settings aren't consistent for each. Also, I never have delay on the kick. I know there's no right or wrong way, i'm just interested to understand you approach a bit better.
The short and long reverb, how would you apply these? Would you apply both to one element? what's the benefit?
Thanks for any help on this!

Everything apart from the bass gets a low cut here.
