What are the noisey elements in this kind of techno tracks?

Post by entropy94 »

Sorry if I sound dumb asking this question。

But I have been a fan of this 90s style of Techno,

When the sub hits at 0:56, there is this airy noise element. I am not sure what type of percussion it is. Is it shakers? I dont think it is a 16th note roll of close hat. Its not as sharp as a closed hat

This type of layer is quite commonly found in DJ Boss, and a lot of 90s techno tracks.

Appreciate any tips... there are lots of thread about the kick and sub, but not this part. Maybe it is obvious to a lot of people, but I can't find this sound from my drum machines.

Shakers with swing and saturation could be a good place to start

Absolutely this, but also adjusting the velocity of each hit and then probably some bus compression to get everything pumping nicely helps a lot with the groove too.

I also didn't know this track - what a banger! Thanks 👍

In that example it's a loop.
Sounds like a combination of shaker and cabasa. Might even be a touch of tambourine in that loop.

That gritted up sound is probably a combination of old school sampling, (pitch sample up twice as fast, then record into sampler and play at half speed), and hard compression.

Swing/shuffle too.
