Reverb 2022

Post by timc3 »

Following on from the 2021 Saturation/Distortion thread I was wondering what everyone is using for Reverb (or perhaps smushed together delays) nowdays?

I tend to use the built in Bitwig ones (more because they are there rather than them being good), Eventide Blackhole in software, Native Instruments RC-24 and RC-48 the most. I also have a couple of the older UAD ones like Realverb but I never really use them except the EMT140 plate. I also have Native Instruments RAUM - not sure I like it, Eventide MangledVerb which I don't use it because I think it sounds shit and I can stick distortion into Bitwig reverb. Oh and the free stuff from Valhalla and Melda. Unfiltered Audio has some in Triad but I never use it as just a reverb.

Hardware wise a Lexicon MPX-550, TC Electronics Fireworx (currently dead), FX Aid XL (hate the interface), Noise Engineering Desmodos Versio (which is great) and Oliverb in Clouds I use a fair bit, but no pedals right now.

Am I missing out on something interesting? I tend to use the hardware ones a bit, but most of the software is just the free ones from bundles and never really explored particularly as coming from Logic that had all I felt I needed.

I use Valhalla vintageverb and soundtoys little plate

I really like little plate because it’s so extremely straightforward and sounds very good to my ears.

I love Raum by Native Instrument, got it free ... dont know when, just rediscovered it a few month ago and its my go to Verb for a lot of things actually. Besides that i like Fab Filters Reverb, Arturias Plate 140, Little Plate and the highly customisable Bitwig Stock Verb.

I do like Little Plate and the Arturia Plate one when I tried it, but the UAD one just seems to work better for me.

But there is a couple there that I haven't heard of before which I was exactly what I was looking for to hopefully demo and see if they offer anything different.

LiquidSonics reverberate and black hole get the most use, then black rooster audios plate reverb as well. Little plate too when I want something quick.

Strymon Starlab. You could send a wet fart through this thing and it would sound like the beautifullest thing ever.

The only bought reverb I have is Valhalla VintageVerb. It's great of course but sometimes I'd like to get short-ish reverbs that sound smooth and not metallic. At least my skills can't conjure such things from VV. Any suggestions?

Thanks! A bit spendy but then again, what does a Bricasti cost in hardware?

Demos sound good.

You can get it for 50% off if you wait for sales.

Speaking of Bricasti, there's also Seventh Heaven (based on the Bricasti M7) from Liquidsonics.

Reverberate has the same impulses as seventh heaven but different controls (as far as I’m aware). Reverberate also has many more impulses so we’ll worth a look if you are after that sort of verb.
Sounds bright but easy fix with eq - use it all the time now.

Just noticed I actually own SSL FLex Verb, which is quite nice and smooth! It was free with my SSL soundcard, I just never had installed it.

Hardware: Eventide Blackhole, Strymon Big Sky, Dark Reverb on Octatrack
Software: Valhalla Room, Valhalla Plate, Ableton convolution or hybrid reverbs

But also I like to not use reverb.

I'm sort of addicted to reverbs. My favorite hardware reverb is Neunaber Immerse MKII. My favorite software reverb currently is Baby Audio Crystalline - which is sort of like VintageVerb on steroids. Highly recommended.
