Korg MS2000B

Post by Críoch »

Just looking at synths with the possiblity of getting something to play with for a while..

I'm selling some stuff - so will probably have enough to cover one - or something in that price range.

SO - Korg MS2000B's - anyone have any experiences of them? Care to give some background on strengths / Weaknesses?

http://www.vintagesynth.com/korg/ms2000.php

Vintage Synth says they compare to the Jp8000. Not that I've ever seen a MS2000 - but I've always considered the Korg as being an all rounder, rather than just being all about the supersaws?

Man.. some nice sounds in that demo. haha @ the visuals. WIsh all demo vids had trippy visuals like that haha

If anyone reads this in the future - found this old review from a magazine. Nice write up.

http://www.audiotechnology.com.au/PDF/1 ... MS2000.pdf

I was wondering if it had the same filter as the MS20.. but it doesnt. Still sounds interesting though

As I commented on FB, I second Mslwte on his novation suggestion. Out of the modern synths they just sound bigger, for want of a better description. And as I said the AN1X. My god how I want one again, they're one of those bits of kit you rarely see for sale, as anyone with one keeps it! Unlike me who stupidly sold it years ago, still keep hassling the mate I sold it to, to let me buy it back!

Cheers Dom!

Yeah - I was looking at an AN1X a couple of years ago, but didnt get it in the end. Although I didnt get to see it, I had a good read of the manual & watched some vids. Looks really nice. It was a good price too - €150 - 200 I think. But I had my eye on something else at the time, so didnt get it. Pity, cos it was so cheap.

Yeah that is cheap! If you get the chance to grab one again, jump on it. It's like it was made for techno!

My take on the Supernova II; it's definitely more trancey, and Novation have their V-Station plugin which gives you a Novation sound right of the bat while the Korg Legacy Collection doesn't give the sound the MS2000 does (and it doesn't exist in software).

The MS2000 is limited with it's voices, it's a Korg thing, most of their synths are the same, but this infact only inspired and triggers creativity. Wanna hear an example of MS2000 in Techno? Ok, just take basically any tune I've made.

This one contains MS2000 all over however:

God - Thats a serious Kick Mattias. Man.

LOL @ the comment about the claps.

-----

yeah - Really cool sounds. Were they all MS? Do you have it midi'd up & record it in, or do you bounce sections etc ?

____________

What do people typically do with their synths in terms of getting the sound in? Bounce & add effects etc..? or have stuff running with the tune? If anyone else would like to comment.

Usually the synths are MIDI connected and I record the sequence or whatever as audio into my DAW. However sometimes I just record all audio right away which was the case with the From above we reach track.

Mattias - Can I be cheeky and ask about that Kick? lol - Its been on my mind all evening. Is it just a synth kick with a long release / decay?

Nepheton basic 808 kick, no fancy effects, no compression, just plain pure clean. That track was live recorded with VSTS and hardware machines running and arranged on one take with a flat mixdown. I made it just when I changed mixer and AD/DA. Steve mastered it though, he EQ:d, compressed it and bumped up the bottom.

Cool - Thanks Mate. Thats a strange coincidence, cos he actually showed me something similar to that long kick in a groove he made when I was over with him (totally different track). Thats kinda why I was checking if I understood what I was hearing in your track right. Excellent - Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, you forget about the mastering stage.. hence the reason why not to over compress / eq?

You know when you see people putting a HUGE Q on the fundamental of a kick during the sound creation stage. Does that have a negative impact on the mastering stage? or as long as the whole thing is mixed fine, it will be ok?

Just I was watching a video last night & the guys Q literally poked out the top of the computer screen. It sounded great - but it got me thinking.

A huge Q as in a very wide or very narrow or very deep cut ?

I have no general rule of how much to cut, only thing is that it's good to know that the narrow Qs for boosting, the more resonance you will get so narrow Qs works much better for cutting. For this track in particular I think I didn't EQ much or anything, that kick also have to do the bass line work simply because there is no bass line in the track.

As for the mastering question...I would say that make the track to sound as close to a "master" as you can without destroying dynamics, avoid clipping and limiting and try to fix a smooth top end since that is harder to fix in a mastering then a too muddy or boomy bottom end.

Anyways with this track I just made a quick mix on my mixer and recorded it, it wasn't a good mix-down at all really, I basically just tested my new mixer and made a track during the time haha,

Good advice with getting the top end smooth.. usually people are paranoid about whats going on below - I know I am. haha - I should be more paranoid about other stuff too

Sorry - It was a very wide Q. Heres a screenshot. Before this, he put a kick into simpler & made a chord from it to make it sound bigger & then added the EQ.

If Ricky Gervais was a producer - he'd be Alex Jones
