Upwards Compression

Post by dubdub »

I've been playing around with Aberrant DSP's "Shapeshifter" (https://aberrantdsp.com/plugins/shapeshifter/), which is a character upwards-compressor and I really like what it's doing to drums and reverb/delay tails, it seems to really just bring out the details and bloom.

Any other recommend compressors that do upwards compression?

I have heard good things about Audiority LDC2 Compander. Not tried it myself though.

I think this is similar, Eventide Omnipressor - does dynamic reversal. It can certainly get a bit wild.

I think it does expansion and not upwards comp though?

From what I've read, upwards comp and dynamic reversal sound like they're the same thing, but I'm not 100% that there aren't differences.

If your on Ableton, there is Multiband Dynamics. Other than that?

Omnipressor is, turning the dial from L to R, a gate, an expander, (bypass in the middle), compressor, limiter (3 o'clock), and finally dynamic reversal thingie, which brings up the quiet parts of the material, as an upward compressor would, but the Omnipressor also lowers loud parts, which an upward compressor wouldn't do, not? So, in that sense, Omnipressor is even more extreme.
Dangerous dial, that one is... Not one to just flick left or right without thought! Or am I the only idiot who did that once, and then never again?

Definitely done that....

I like Omnipressor but it's a bit unruly and sometimes hard to dial in, I find the Shapeshifter thing more useful on a wider variety of sources.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Shapeshifter on acoustic instruments in that video! Like its Lofi sound a lot.

It's pretty unique, haven't really come across anything else that sounds like it.

I think there's a demo now, well worth a try.

You're not. Put another comp/limiter after it.

TDR Nova also does upwards compression so you could use the whole band or a subsekt of them.
