Where can i take this loop?

Post by Jackdix06 »

Ok so i have finally plucked up the courage to post up a little loop i have made. I am pretty pleased with the outcome so far but I have only been producing seriously for just over a year, making me new to the game so i am keen to know your thoughts on how it can be improved and where i could take it. Any tips would be great!

Nice loop Jack :)

I would echo kuba's advice here and say try and develop it into a complete song. It's ok to leave the sound design a bit rough around the edges for now, and you might find that you get some more ideas when you get it sounding closer to a complete track.

Make sure you post up and let us know about any progress you make on it.

yep nice work! sounds good.

i will also echo the others' advice too

people can't tell you what to do - because it's your creation! we can give you direction on the mix, the arrangement once it's done...

but i'm not convinced that posting unfinished songs is particularly helpful. if you've lost perspective on your track; put it on the backburner for long enough that you forget about it -or mine the sounds out of it and start something else.

Good advice ozias. Leaving unfinished tracks/loops for a while can often spark new creative ideas when you return to them. Sometimes it can be the exact opposite though, and you realise that it actually wasn't all that great to begin with! I often dedicate a day to simply play through the hundreds of unfinished tracks I have saved, getting rid of some and picking some out to resume work on.

And as for your loop, have you tried a 4/4 cowbell? I gotta have more cowbell! ;)
Thank you for the laughs, debate, new music found, production tips etc etc over the years. I wish Subsekt and everyone all the best for the future. Wiu.

Thanks a lot guys :) some good advice here. Definitely agree with you there Ozias, i haven't lost any perspective yet but i was just interested to know what other people thought of it so far. I have a couple of unfinished thing but i feel like this one it actually going somewhere, its just putting the ideas down that i sometimes struggle with. I will keep working on it and post any updates of it

I decided to stop uploading stuff / ideas / 3/4 finished things to SC cos it was the kiss of death. It would be no sooner uploaded, than I'd move on to something else.

Haven't really had the time recently to do as much music as I want - but I think sharing stuff when its not ready is a bad idea.

For me anyway.

Well if I had that loop I'd cut up the audio and create a broken beat pattern then add some rides and a bit of Porc and smash it with distortion :P

You should flick through those loops again mate and see how you feel about them now. Quality stuff you have made in the past!

This is a common problem for LOTS of people I spoke to. They make a short snippet, some loops, then upload to Soundcloud. Get some comments then they move on to something else.

I think this is spot on. People rush too much in music today I guess, they wanna get feedback and results NOW, instead of taking their time, gain confidence and experience and feel "ready"!

This is a really interesting discussion for me and I started a thread asking some questions about it a while ago

For me, the 'post up clips and ask for feedback' thing can be double edged. On one side it's good to get told that you're doing well or that something sounds OK or that you've had some good ideas, which can be validating especially if you're working in a vacuum, which in itself can be inspiration enough to improve or move on to something better, but at the same time it can leave other areas wide open.

The way I think personally is that if I've asked for advice it shows a lack of confidence and direction in what I'm doing, and by taking advice on board I'm showing a willingness to conform to someone else's standards (which isn't necessarily bad).

It's not a rule, but asking for feedback can be a minefield of unintended consequences and when giving any out I'll usually try to be as neutral and general as possible.

Me too and I think it sort of keeps it real to an extent.

And also where getting some good feedback can be handy. I find sometimes my sense of confidence isn't the most objective source of information.

Yeah it was definatly a confidence thing for me with me being new to it all. I always want to better myself and those first couple of comments saying the loop sounded nice has gave me more inspiration, it's always good to know your doing something right. I definatly won't be giving up on it :)

There is another reason I like to upload snippets, or loops. In this day and age it's so easy for someone to just rip a track from soundcloud etc, uploading a (low quailty) loop (of a finished track) is a good way of keep people interested or up to day. That's mostly why I do it now..

Does sound decent there is a good thread on here about arrangement you should check it out. I agree with matthias about people rushing for results, its counterproductive, time invested, experience, experimentation and learning will bring the results.

If you are in ableton why not set up some scenes and jam out an arrangement you can refine, then focus on recording some automation changes, even small changes keep the listeners ears working!

@Jackdix06 I think that loops great. You've got the makings of a good track there. Finish it, arrange it, add some parts to help the transitions between sections and just get it done. The hardest part is finishing tracks. It's a great start, you'll learn a lot by following through on it regardless if you are 100% happy with the end result. But in my humble opinion the base of a good track is there. Follow through and complete it. You'll learn from the process one way or another.
