Sample editor?

Post by Martin »

Hi!

Im looking for a sample editor, to do tasks like cutting up and sorting field recordings etc. In the past i have done this within ableton, dragging the raw files in to the project and doing the editing within the project.

Now i would like to do more "pre processing" and sorting of my recordings and i guess there are better tools!?
What do you use?

I'm using Audacity. It's basic the way I am using it.. just chopping & exporting, though I know you could do a lot more with it.

I find it's more easy to use since I've got familiar with the keyboard shortcuts. It was a bit uninspiring before that piece of learning. Totally my bad.

Is it unstable on Mac? Using it on Windows. Find it good.. though would be interested in suggestions also.

Its fine most of the time, but it does randomly crash for me when opening a lot of files or having a few windows open. I never really loose anything, because it has recovery files, just a bit slow/annoying sometimes.

Yeah.. I used to find it clunky & basic, but I've become a bit of an Audacity Jedi since I learned the shortcuts.

You can totally take it for granted tbh. And it's free.

Yup, not complaining at all. Still keeping my eyes open for alternatives though.

You have to really think hard why you wouldn't go with Reaper..

Size - minimal
GUI - minimal and highly customizable
Cost - not free, but in reality it's free if you don't want to support
Editing - great for audio editing.
Bulk processing - it's perfect for this stuff. I've coded a few stuff for Audacity in LISP but rather use Python or Lua with Reascript in Reaper. Definitely recommend Reaper. Got a great community as well with a vast library of custom scripts that do all kind of stuff.

Peace

I've recently used Ocenaudio to quickly edit some samples to load them in my RS7000. Works fine, easy to operate and it's free.

I actually had Ocenaudio installed from a previous time a similar thread came around, tried it just now and it appears to be really good at what it does!

On the Mac, DSP-Quattro is pretty good.

Do you have live 10? There's been a lot of improvements in that department, and then batch naming is especially easy on a mac. Don't think you really need anything else.

This. Having bit of programming background, I always go and try to find keyboard shortcuts first. This even allows you to customise them yourself, so GET SOME! It's for some silence detection splitting thing as well, so I tend to record stuff from trial version of VSTis and cut them up in Audacity real quick

That's a great idea re: silence. I'm going to be sampling the utter fuck out of some stuff in the coming months.. so good idea. Been doing it arseways in Ableton, just cos it's easy to rename files once you find them in the explorer. Slow progress.

Will definitely trial that.

I'm slowly moving towards using Reaper and I guess there's going to be some way how to do same thing as well.

Yeah I bought a Reaper license, it is pretty damn good. But for now I find just quick editing of samples easier to do outside of Reaper.
