Best kick drum compressor 2015?

X2! You are asking an impossible question mate there is no best kick drum compressor only a multitude of compressors, saturation, tape emulators and distortion plug ins all of which can be useful for processing kick drums. I'll bet there's a load of posts pop up if you search here mate.

Indeed a strange question, just learn your tools.... No need for a 'special kick drum compressor'.

What you could try to get heavier kicks though is throw on a hipass filter and crank up the resonance.

Depends on the kick and how its made. I only compress kicks I've layered for gelling, for example.

My personal rule of thumb when it comes to compression is that if I can't explain to myself why I'm compressing something, then I don't. That explanation has to be more indepth than, "punch", "make it sound fat" etc, there has to be a real reason to do it.

For me it is, I rarely have a kick that hasn`t been compressed or saturated. I tend to work with synthesised kicks and they generally always benefit from some dynamic control.

Compression is also a huge sound design, coloring and subtle distortion tool for me. The mojo you can get from a 1176 at fast release settings is just lovely.
