Artists with a musical personality

Post by Dust Layer »

Can you give some artists names (preferably in electronic music but any good stuff is welcome) that have a strong musical personnality?
I mean those one that you can identify a new track without clues, Aphex Twin is a good example i think.

And a little debate around this : "what is more enjoyable, a perfect track from a technical point of view (but quite generic) or something more personnal (less mastered from a technical pov, even quite poor)"

If you can give examples again from both sides it would be great, thanks!

2 people I can pick out pretty often is Inigo Kennedy & Voidloss.

AnD also.

Erm.. It's good to have an identity, it's a positive because their music is good. Not saying all their music sounds the same.. But there is usually a fingerprint in the way they treat their drums, use musical phrasing or how they layer their tracks.

I can pick out certain people too because I don't like their music. That's a negative.. But also a positive, for me I guess :)

You say the most obvious thing is in their drum sequencing?
Yes i think it's very good to have personality, maybe it's the most important point for me (and not easy to develop)

Amon Tobin, Monolake, Noisia, Shackleton, Mala, Instra:mental, ASC. Off the top of my head all have a sound I can pick out instantly, but there are loads of others.

I just love ASC even when hes doing things that are 'not for me' somehow. I will have to give his last album a few more listen before deciding about it though.

From the house side of things, Kerri Chandler and Theo Parrish are hard to imitate. Many have tried, many have failed.

I think orbital has a strong musically personality. They've pretty much stuck to there sound throughout their career. No one else sounds like them. They can be weird and quirky at times.

I know what you mean. He's a big Renoise user and that tracker vibe definitely comes through in his music. I like the new album a lot, but then I'm a sucker for a cinematic, bladerunneresque sound.

Some artists stand out right away and some others take a few listen to until you just sit down and realize they have something different.

Frank Zappa.

Yeah. Some will also develop another type of sound and while it can be hard to recognise their tracks at first they still have their core personality in them. Heres some that came to mind thats not already been mentioned.

Burial, Jon Hopkins, Mattias Fridell, Go Hiyama, Desiderii Marginis and Dimlite.

True that. As if you were slowly attracted into their world.

Is that a Zappa quote (he has been quoted numerous times...) or your introduction to the man? Many years ago, I organised a few evenings, just with a few friends, to show them there was more than 'dancing fool' and 'bobby brown'. No dope, only coffee and cigarettes and coffee (nah, not really).

I've heard many things In similar vein of Autechre, but none have that machine soul Booth/Brown put in their music. Reading the film topic, I was thinking how wonderful Wall-e would be like with some Autechre sounds...

Bohren und der club of Gore, Battles...
I'm not techno-ized enough yet to dare go into that territory...

Yeah, and to know they used to make brutal metal before turning 'jazz noire'.
(They got their name from the Dutch band Gore which they were fans of. If you're into instrumental metal with lots of rhythmical variations, check them out!)
They are also very nice live, and funny. Very dim stage, they change instruments regularly during shows, and one time, in a quiet moment, the drummer wanted to go back to his drumset, and fell over a stand into his kit, clashcaboom, silence and then some german swearing  ahh well, you had to be there...

gotta say carl craig all the way. nobody sounds like him. nobody ever will. i think his more out there ideas are hard to understand at first but after awhile you really start to understand where he's coming from.
