Modulated filter sound
Modulated filter sound
I'm hoping some people here can push me in the right direction towards this sound.
It is the modulated filtered sound that makes the body of this track.
I've heard this sort of thing from a few artists so I assume there is some sort of common method that i am missing.
Is it a case of modulating the filter on a different timing? Independant triggering of the filter envelope? a heavily distorted pitch enveloped 909 tom? Simple autofilter?
There is a delay and specific hihat pattern coming in and out that all adds to create it but i just can't get the synth part.
Please forgive me for the 'how do i get this sound?' but man, i've tried.

Re: Modulated filter sound
I'm checking on the phone so might not be very accurate but to me it seems the hats just have a volume lfo. As far as the synth is concerned, it seems filter cutoff is mapped to velocity and there's another filter opening up with a semi fast attack on retrigger. Someone with a better ear come on and lynch me.

I made a similar track a few months ago...

Do you mean that squelchy synth sound?

Yes! Really nice!Mono-xID wrote:I made a similar track a few months ago...

How are you getting to this?
Re: Modulated filter sound
Still at work. Will give some insights later when home.
Re: Modulated filter sound
Sooo, just arrived at home and while I tried to find the project file, I remembered that I recorded the synth sound with my Dominion 1 direct to an audio file. So I'm not able to give you exact settings but this sound is very basic and easy to recreate.
Any softsynth will do I think. For the basic sound i used just one oscillator set to saw wave as far as I remember. Of course you can try square wave as well, or use 2 Osc's with same or different waveforms and detune them. Experiment, make it your sound.
Now modulate the pitch of the oscillator with a LFO set to ramp down and make sure the LFO retriggers on every note. Set the modulation depth to taste. Now set the Filter to bandpass, pull cutoff down, play around with the resonance and use the Filter envelope to make it snappy. From there on its up to you. Modulate filter cutoff with velocity or with another LFO, tweak the filter cutoff live and record the audio, whatever floats your boat..
Add effects like reverb, delay, phaser, chorus to taste...
Done...hope that helps

Re: Modulated filter sound
Cheers for the guidelines Mono.
After fiddling a bit, I got in the ballpark using Operator and a triangle wave.
I think what makes it work in a track is the modulation that comes after getting to the basic sound.

Re: Modulated filter sound
Don't forget to set the notes polyrhythmic. Together with the delay and cutoff modulation it gives nice interactions.
Re: Modulated filter sound
Great thanks for the explanation Mono. Really like your tunes.
Going to put in the hours with this over the weekend.
That Dominion sounds so robust!

Are you using Ableton btw? I'll try to recreate the sound within Ableton and could send you the project file so you see what's going on. But honestly, this sound isn't too hard to program.
Re: Modulated filter sound
I'm using logic, which is a bit more difficult to freely assign lfos than ableton far as i know. But from your explanation, I should be able to patch something up in reaktor without too much trouble.Mono-xID wrote:

I think my modulations were a bit too rigid and in sync with eachother so i was always getting this predictable and not organic feel.
Big help:)
Re: Modulated filter sound
It all comes down to the bandpass filter modulation together with the oscillator pitch.
Re: Modulated filter sound
Was looking for how to make this sound as well, thanks for the tip mono, will try it on a microbrute
Re: Modulated filter sound
Is there a reason you're using a retrig ramp down LFO instead of a pitch envelope?Mono-xID wrote:Sooo, just arrived at home and while I tried to find the project file, I remembered that I recorded the synth sound with my Dominion 1 direct to an audio file. Wonderful tip Mono, thanks a lot, this is what i made following your advice, thinking about developing this into a track:
