Re: Fucking originality
I had a bit of a "fuck my cynicism" moment and just surfed all the new releases on Hardwax. Now vinyl doesn`t represent the whole of techno, it has it`s own problems of funneling "safe" music to the public. But even so, I found nothing that didn`t instantly sound like a record I already own. It see...

Re: Fucking originality
That's what it boils down to: finding your own voice, and then expressing yourself honestly through it. Maybe your most honest voice is to push the frontiers of sonic experimentation; maybe instead it's to carry the torch within some sub-style which is already tried and true. IMO either is good, and...

Re: Fucking originality
new for the sake of new is shit. It is amateur new as a byproduct of strong voice and conviction of the artist can be good. Over time this can develop into a solid original body of work. This sort of discussion comes up alot in the design world where 'originality' 'freshness' 'the next' 'new' bla b...

Re: Fucking originality
Long story short: focus on doing something well rather than doing something unique. Even when you try and copy or imitate, you will inevitably place your own stamp on it. That`s pretty much the opposite of what I stand for. I`d rather hear some fresh but badly produced music, than a polished perfec...

Re: Fucking originality
I think that techno and adjacent genres have an obsession with "originality" which actually becomes detrimental. Similar to capitalism's unyielding demand for constant growth, in which no business can simply find its niche and maintain a steady-state profit margin while making a good product, the te...

Re: Going Modular..
Fook me, i just got my Frap Tools Fumana filterbank. Damn, this thing is a sounddesigners daydream. I'm stunned. oh! may we hear? i haven't loved the demos i've heard so far, but the spectral transfer thing appeals to me it's HUGE though! I had a Fumana last year. Here are a couple examples: Sub-au...

Re: hardware saturation
This is going to be an extremely niche and expensive option, but for those who may be inclined: Carsten Schippmann is now taking preorders for the third, and supposedly final, run of the Ebbe und Flut filter units. http://schippmann-music.com/ These things are basically precision Sherman Fitlerbanks...

Re: hardware saturation
There is also Erica Synths Acid Box which you can push the levels and it'll clip nicely. It has an LFO and envelope follower to link to filter. I prefer the predictability of this unit over the filterbank. I`m considering getting an acidbox, and a zen delay. They both seem to have a nice refined so...

Re: Only bass-traps for treatment?
The bass trap should indeed absorb higher frequencies arriving at it, yes -- but you will be placing them in the corners of your room in order for them to do their primary job. Thus, they will do nothing to help you with creating a Reflection Free Zone at your listening position, which should be you...

I'm interested, but have seen enough reports of dire CPU load to want to early-adopt on these.

Re: Going Modular..
I jumped into the rabbit hole with arms wide open, and it was the best decision I've ever made (albeit a really expensive one). Currently I nearly filled up my custom built 9U 98HP case and it's just a wonderful sonic playground that puts a fat smile on my face whenever I have time to play around. ...

Re: Saturation/distortion 2021
Anyone ever use, or have opinions on, the Elysia Karacter? One of the rack versions has popped up 2nd hand for a decent price -- not much more than a new analogue heat. I'm interested.
Re: Waldorf M
Okay, I'm prepared to eat crow on my original impression/comments on the M: my curiosity got the best of me and there was a gap in my setup for a quality digital-osc synth, and I'm a sucker for digital oscs through an analogue filter/VCA chain, so I sprung for one. This is a great synth. Unlike the ...

Re: Saturation/distortion 2021
I remain unconvinced with these things, and I think they are falsely advertised. Empirical Labs did it first (and better) with the FATSO. But the thing is, these things are a fake out in many ways. You get the transformer stage and tape head emulation, but the transformer is nowhere near heft of a ...

Re: Saturation/distortion 2021
I've been 500-curious lately and have had eye on the Neve 542 units in particular. They use the same electronics as an actual tape head in the saturation stage. Pricey, but very tempting. o4zDB9FFdVw I remain unconvinced with these things, and I think they are falsely advertised. Empirical Labs did...

Re: Harking back to the old days
Ah, but the train station is a tangible physical space which has a definite location relative to the city/Earth. We're talking here about subjective value judgements of what is and isn't "good" music. Those only exist within the squishy meat. As I sit here in front of my computer, "train stations" ...
