I`m no expert here, but checking the impedance and sensitivity of the ER4`s, both are easy to drive, so I would say if you have a decent soundcard (focusrite entry level is fine, knowing their headphone specs) then you are fine, which is what intuitively I would have said anyway...

As an update on the ear training... I've been doing at least an hour a day for the past few days and the difficulty does not seem to scale with the increase in 'levels'
