Re: How much should I be taking from listening to a mix at low volumes on headphones?

While I don't use this method exactly, this video from Dan Worrall explains what is happening pretty well. It's certainly something to bear in mind. https://youtu.be/wgogJmeQFvY I picked up Steves tip about listening at the same volume maybe a year or so ago. I think it has helped enourmously. I ha...

Re: How much should I be taking from listening to a mix at low volumes on headphones?

The OP There is a lot at play here. Firstly how do your cans match up to your monitors. Secondly are you using some kind of can opener software to give a phantom centre and deal with binaural issues. I often, both in production and mastering, do a slow volume sweep on the mix from 0 to max comfort,...

Re: How much should I be taking from listening to a mix at low volumes on headphones?

Beside loudspeakers (whether full blown monitors or headphone's ones) never reacting exactly the same way at different volumes, this is, mainly and by far, the effect of the Fletcher Munson curve - that is, our ears having a loudness-dependant frequency response curve. The "right" EQ / balance is b...

How much should I be taking from listening to a mix at low volumes on headphones?

Heya, Bit of a strange question but I'll try to articulate it. I often will turn down the master to have a listen to a mix or individual track at low volume to see what frequencies stand out etc. using my production cans. Can be handy to identify when your hats or claps/percs/etc are mixed too loud....

Re: Kinda tearing my hair out trying to recreate the timbre of these UKG chords

I have been wondering if the original source of all these organs is all those forgotten romplers and digital things that didnt get caught up in the analogue hardware craze. Lost to time...?

Re: Kinda tearing my hair out trying to recreate the timbre of these UKG chords

Yeah sick track that. Good example of the chord too. I've still not really found it. I've come close, but the M1 is too always too sibilant - i might try lots of pre EQ before resampling.

Re: Kinda tearing my hair out trying to recreate the timbre of these UKG chords

I reinstalled TAL-Sampler last night as theres been an update - I had some interesting results so I'm going to go back to some of the M1 presets and Hammond presets later to see if that makes a difference. I've been using just Ableton sampler up until now.

Re: Kinda tearing my hair out trying to recreate the timbre of these UKG chords

I tried this Hammond emulation: https://www.lostin70s.com/plugins/HaNonB70 Whilst it makes some cool well known sounds it doesnt quite hit the right spot for this sound. I did only give it a quick go mind so maybe I should try again. Again its kind of lacking some of the texture. I've used D16 for A...

Kinda tearing my hair out trying to recreate the timbre of these UKG chords

Heya, Oof, having a real time of it on this one. I've discovered Gearspace quotes from 2004, old weird sample packs from the 90s and YouTube tutorials shot on flip phones. Heres the sound: Stab starting at 0:17 sec, nice break 50 seconds-ish onwards where its isolated. WJhriPN3ZTQ I think this is a ...

Re: Why do my own kicks cause my room to echo?

Ah thanks dude - well thats good to know at least. What a mystery.

What it has taught me though is to ensure I listen to kicks as quietly as possible to see if they still sound balanced. If the sonic character doesn't change as you turn up the volume then it's good to go.

Re: Why do my own kicks cause my room to echo?

Yeah I guess the main thing that I wanted to understand was why I rarely/never hear the same reflections/poppyness on released/mastered tracks. It was less about trying to make a working studio out of my room (which is my lounge... so impossible). That audio file is the same kick sample with differe...

Re: Why do my own kicks cause my room to echo?

So here's a quick export of some kicks - https://soundcloud.com/humanfutures/kikcz/s-knDYWiIBSUK 4 beats per kick, goes through 6 kicks as I've been duplicating and tweaking, listening back on monitors, tweaking again, etc. I started with the kick at the beginning and the kick at the end is where I'...

Re: Why do my own kicks cause my room to echo?

It seems to be something to do with how much 100-400hz I have in my kicks. Perhaps I'm 'unable' to hear that on headphones so much.

Re: Why do my own kicks cause my room to echo?

Yeah interesting, I did wonder if mastering did play a part. I have noticed that my own kicks feel wider in my room than those from tracks - even though I mono the kick. I'll try the compression trick!

Re: Why do my own kicks cause my room to echo?

Thanks all - yeah, maybe I should spend some time with them getting really brutal on the EQ to see what's up. It's gotta be an EQ thing right - i'm probably not highpassing my kicks enough, or leaving too much in the bottom so its a bit flabby. On headphones it can be hard to pick up on that as it c...

Why do my own kicks cause my room to echo?

Hello, I produce on headphones 99.9% of the time, but when I do turn on my monitors I notice my kicks always make my room ring/echo/reverb at a really honky/boxy frequency. First of all, the room I have my monitors in is terrible - you couldn't get a worse room for acoustics. I'm not really trying t...
