Re: The middle-class musician may be a thing of the past, thanks to the pandemic.

It's always sad when artists of any discipline are held back from creating and distributing their work. Yeah basically this, I'm not gonna get into middle vs working class musicians or the somewhat overblown/straw man "it'll weed out the posers" argument (i"ve been talking about dance music and DJi...

Re: Quarantine

I live alone and apart from the weekends where I used to visit friends/go to a pub, nothing really changed that much. I tend to keep myself busy with cooking, making music,... like before. Going to a supermarket has become a weird experience for sure. Hope you're all safe and sound and not slowly l...

Re: Where is dancemusic culture heading?

I listened to that podcast and found it quite interesting, tbh the overall conclusion I drew from it and from my own experience of going out for 10-15 years is that the scene kinda seems to be splitting 2 ways lately: - big, festival-like events with lots of name DJs, that clubbers will probably sav...

Re: ValhallaDSP delay plugin is out now!

I like it so far, mostly just been using it in tape mode but gotta play more with the others. Yeah it's not doing anything too revolutionary but I feel like I was lacking a nice bread and butter tape-style delay, I'm on Ableton 9 so haven't got the new v10 delay which looks much more functional than...

Re: Arturia Minibrute 2

I find I don't actually use my Minibrute in my music that much, I guess it's helped me discover that I gravitate more towards dual oscs and 24dB filters in my sound design! (not sure if the filter will still just be a 12dB in the new one?) But FWIW anytime a friend ever comes round for a jam it's al...

MIDI tempo issues when sending automation to hardware

I'm finding more and more these days after experimenting with both in the last few years, that making music on hardware is fun - but too limiting to me as I've not quite got the skills or balls to mix/record/tweak straight from the hardware, and enjoy the power and flexibility of using software proc...

Re: Limiters / Limiting Every Sound (?)

I think it was this Randomer feature on RA where he talks about using limiting kinda as a sound design tool to make stuff bang, might be of relevance? Not something I've spent lots of time trying anyway.

Re: Hardest part of the process

I struggle with the 2nd Synth most of the time, or a new Element without sounding too cheesy and new, something to fill the monotony in the track, mostly somewhere between ~2 and 4 mins. A lot of erase, try & error, reloads~ For sure, the "New Element" that just keeps things going along nicely is a...

I'm kinda digging the more plain/generic vibe at the moment, bit less sus when browsing at work ;)

Re: Let's share our best "quick but essential" tip's in here

Just figured this out, with Operator if you have your oscillator phase retrigger disabled while doing FM you get continually changing timbres for free. Osc retriggering is one of these things that I've discovered is easy to overlook. Operator's a particularly good example even just in the troublesh...

Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music

The guy who wrote it has been penning these kinda long-winded/slightly bitter-old-dude vibe/oversimplified view of 'underground vs mainstream' posts for almost as long as I've been into dance music and AFAIK his own musical leanings are quite middle of the road house, I don't give him an excessive a...

Re: Mr.free time

Producing probably takes up most of my non-working / non-sleeping time followed by DJing related practice and browsing, and going out to clubs etc regularly... otherwise, I'll see my friends, try to read a bit most days, and ride my bike or walk for exercise. Occasionally go see some art or a film. ...

Re: When life gets in the way of music

+1 on this, not so much on the work front (job has its upsides, I've gone into this elsewhere..) but some setbacks in social life, love life and couple of negative developments in mental and physical health lately, latter ruling out most sport/exercise atm. All proving to be a bit distracting from t...

Re: Balancing creative ambitions with real life responsibili

My current status is decent - in a corporate job which for the last while generally isn't too challenging in terms the effort it takes and any late nights etc, I can listen to music in my earphones for a lot of the day and I went down to a 4 day/30 hour week recently. Decent manager and colleagues w...

I’ve now got a 2015 mbp, 15 inches. I’m very, very happy with it. My only qualm is that the ssd drive doesn’t have quite enough memory, but I plan on grabbing a USB hub and using my external hard drive anyways. I recently picked up a 2015 15" MBP as well, a few weeks ago. It's taking over as my mai...

Re: Any of you guys use an MPC?

I've had an MPC1000 for a few years. Mostly running JJOS2, recently giving 2XL a shot which I'm still getting the hang of really - more features generally but a couple of things like naming tracks and getting to the step-sequencer style editor which I use a lot (name escapes me right now) seem to ha...

I kinda like the idea of a book that actually goes deep into hardware design from a user interface/human factors/psychology type perspective, I'm assuming this isn't it though?

Re: Are all RCA cables born the same?

Really all I look for in a cheap rca cable is a decent connection. That's all you need imo. Something that looks secure and with a bit of quality. Pretty much this - the construction quality of the cable and connectors rather than the sound is what might persuade me to spend a bit more if I'll be p...

Re: How much of your work do you bin?

If you are "finishing" every tune, you probably aren't experimenting enough. Lots of ideas I start don't ever get finished. Then once I finish stuff I wait until I have a collection of finished stuff, and I assess it all in bulk, and bin the average stuff and keep the cream. I suppose I let maybe 4...
